David Hill asks about a ThinkPad netbook

by John Hobbes , posted 04/27/09 4:05 AM

Lenovo blogger and VP of design David Hill is asking for everyone’s input on a ThinkPad netbook. I’m a bit late in posting this here for everyone, but at least now there are almost 100 comments for you to read, if you’re interested in seeing what the masses have to say on the topic.

What if Lenovo was to make a ThinkPad branded netbook? Would you say, “What a relief, finally a netbook that really means business” ? What would you like to see in such a hypothetical offering? How black and square should we make it? Maybe it should come in colors like the IdeaPad S10. Could I interest you in a PinkPad?

A ThinkPad netbook would be interesting, but I don’t really think it would be a netbook. To be a true ThinkPad, the netbook would have to have unrivaled ergonomics, hardware security, and uber-hinges. To add these things to an ultra small form factor would require a fair amount of engineering and the price tag would not likely even be in the $500 range, defeating the entire purpose of a netbook. That doesn’t mean people wouldn’t buy it, but I wouldn’t really call it a netbook in that price range. Am I off base here?

Once the usual sources found this blog post, a ton of “Lenovo considering ThinkPad netbook” articles popped up, claiming Lenovo is investigating a ThinkPad netbook. I guess that’s true. But the articles make you believe that production is imminent or something. This is just one guy, albeit a rather important one, testing the waters for his own info, which may or may not (likely not) lead to anything. He’s done it before plenty of times – don’t get too excited folks.

On a related note, Lenovo has launched a new blog around education. Welcome Michael Schmedlen to the blogosphere here.
