Boost your netbook/UMPC graphics performance

Those of you with the good old GMA 950 graphics and a netbook or UMPC might get some joy out of this utility. It turns out that on a lot of the smaller machines like netbooks and UMPC’s, the clock rate for GMA950 graphics was turned down a bit to save on power usage and heat. There is a free utility that will boost your GMA950′s clock rate up to the stock 400MHz, from 133MHz or 166MHz.

UMPCPortal even went so far as to test the results with Crystal Mark, and found upwards of a 20% increase in performance. Now the real question is, how much of a difference will that make in a game? I’m venturing to say that it’s akin to making a Geo Metro 20% faster – still takes half an hour to get up to cruising speeds…
