Would you like a virtual WiFi card with your Windows 7?

by John Hobbes , posted 05/18/09 11:05 AM

Computing seems to be trending towards eeking every bit of efficiency out of an existing device rather than adding more devices, which is of course a great direction to be heading in. It started with Intel’s Hyper-Threading feature on Pentium 4 processors, virtualization is getting VERY important, and now we have virtual WiFi adapters.

Windows 7 will incorporate a Virtual WiFi feature that allows your wireless card to be used in more than one way. Some potential uses of this feature are cited as:

  • Connecting the machine to a network and then using the virtual adapter to turn the machine into a hot spot for others to connect to
  • Connecting to a wireless network and ad hoc network at the same time

I guess you could connect to two WiFi hot spots at the same time, although I’m not sure why you would want to. Either way, look for updated drivers to be coming when Win7 goes final and public. Get your dual virtual wireless network adaptor pwnage on!
