Lenovo leaks the ThinkPad T400s

by John Hobbes , posted 06/17/09 7:35 PM

Not that anyone had any question it was coming, but Lenovo’s Matt Kohut just put up a post telling us the following:

Yes, the ThinkPad T400s exists.  I use it.  I love it.

A lot.

Thanks for the in-depth analysis Matt. ;) On a more serious note, a few videos were recorded by the Center for Severe Weather Research team using, or rather abusing, the T400s. Not only do they “accidentally” flip it onto the ground a few times and leave it in the rain, they also run a 26,000 pound truck over it – and it still works (mostly).

Hit the link for some T400s abuse. Since Matt has confessed, I will too. I have a T400s. I’m using it. It’s sweet. I can say no more.

You lucky mofo! I’m waiting for your awesome review John!

Uhm… in the storm chasers videos the laptop looks like it’s 16:9 not 16:10. I hope my eyes are tricking me.

I’ve used a 16:9 ideapad for a few hours (setting up an install) and then moved back to my 24″ 16:10 desktop display and IMMEDIATELY noticed the difference. It was striking.

Oh nooo I hope it’s not 16:9. And I’d want more screen resolution, the X200S already has 1440×900.

I dunno, it sounds like it could be sweet but it could also be an awkward in-between size. I lug my 15″ T61 to and from the office sometimes and it’s a good desktop replacement but travelling with it would be awful. And the X40 (comparable size to X200, I think) is very portable but a bit small for extended use. X200S adds more screen res, which is the X40’s main shortcoming. X300/301 has the optical drive which is useless in this day and age (4GB flash stick=$8). I’d go for a T300S which would be the size of an X301 but rearrange the internal space to have two 2.5″ drive slots (I’d put in one SSD and one HD) instead of a 1.8″ and a 5″ optical.

X201s will be more than enough for me – as long as it is still 16:10 1440*900 res. If it’s not I’ll pick up an X200s on the cheap.

Lenovo is just being cheap and trying to follow the “trend” of 16:9 laptops. Look at Apple, they still have 16:10 models so don’t try to tell me it’s because of panel manufacturers (as one guy on LenovoBlogs tried to claim). 16:10 is still the preferred size for professionals due to it’s increased desktop area — and isn’t ThinkPad supposed to be for professionals?

Keep the 16:9 crap on the mainstream IdeaPad line and leave our 16:10 ThinkPads alone.

  5. @none: You won’t find higher than 1440×900 in a panel below 15-inches (at least in widescreen, yes there do exist 12.1-inch 1400×1050)

P.S. I might suggest you consider using a real user-name if you’re going to stick around, it helps everyone follow the conversation if you have a unique name.
