Welcome to the first in a regular series: What would you change?
If the T Series is Lenovo’s flagship ThinkPad, the Y650 is their flagship IdeaPad. Sporting an extremely thin design for a 16-inch chassis, sleek design, and gorgeous LCD, it is a well featured multimedia machine at a competitive price.
But as we all know, nothing is perfect. Luckily the state of technology today is that everyone can have a voice and I am here asking for yours.
What would you change about Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650?
There are a few “common” complaints about the Y650 and I myself have a few nigs against it. Leave your suggestions in the comments and I’ll collect them through the week. Come Friday, I’ll post the collective input along with my own views on the topic. Ready? Go!

Illuminating keyboard….a must!
[...] this past Monday. This week we are seeking your feedback on Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y650. See the original post here for details and be sure to drop us a comment or two! SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: “Reminder: What [...]
I would cut down on the acre of palmrest and slide the keyboard down towards the bottom a bit.
[...] not too late, head over to this post and let us know how you would change Lenovo’s IdeaPad [...]
i second the illuminating keyboard.
keep the speakers at the very top, move the keyboard down a bit and add a numeric pad.
keep the mousepad large and wide – good for selecting text on a widescreen.
move the ctrl key one more to the right – i like to alt-tab through my windows and would like the ctrl key to be adjacent to the alt key so i can ctl-tab through tabs in firefox.
combo e-sata and usb drive to make a total of 3.
i know it’s a multimedia notebook but do we really need an optical drive? how often do you use it? create a design with a large widescreen and provide a usb optical drive. or make it slot loading like apples.
jump on the i7 cpu speedwagon.
and i don’t like how there’s a break in the copper trim above the optical. see pic 10.
keep color scheme – white & black and copper trim adds color which isn’t gaudy.
Lenovo, pleaseeee move down the keyboard, if the optical drive coming under it is preventing you from keeping the slim profile, why not just get rid of the optical drive for some models (maybe even all together)?
What would make the Y650 perfect:
1. Illuminating keyboard (as others have mentioned)
2. Perhaps have a chiclet keyboard (its less prone to dirty deposits in em’)
3. 1080p display*** (come on, its a 16″ even dell has a 15.6″ is 1080p option)
4. Better battery life**** A real time solid 3-4hrs is a must with discrete graphics on the Y650
Forgot to mention, with switchable graphics (integrated/discrete) lenovo can enhance battery life. That would be really useful in other ways, such as lower heat.
