
Most users who need high capacity 2.5-inch drives, generally in notebooks, have been stuck with 5400rpm versions. While modern hard disk technology have improved overall performance to levels that 5400rpm spindle speeds don’t feel pokey, there is still a definite performance upgrade to be found in 7200rpm drives.
Toshiba sees demand for high capacity, high performance storage that doesn’t have the high price tag of SSDs. The new drive line also manages to be more green by eliminating certain toxic chemicals traditionally used in manufacturing.
There is no word on price, but it should be available to OEMs and consumers by the end of the year.
