The latest round of financial results for the PC industry have been collected and there is definitely change in the air.
Research firm Gartner shares that HP is still leading the industry with an impressive 9% growth over last year, giving them 18.4% of the market. For a long time Dell was dominant, but they are still scrambling to adapt and have even lost their 2nd place rank. Acer slips into the 2nd place spot with 12.4% of the market, showing an amazing 23.6% increase in sales from last year. Dell’s sales are down 6.7% from last year, leaving them in 3rd.
Lenovo has shown a strong 15.8% growth over last year, but it’s overall shipment numbers are relatively low and yield only 7.4% market share. IDC, a rival firm to Gartner, estimates Lenovo has done even a bit better than that with 18% growth and 8.9% market share. While they are still a relatively small player in the industry, Lenovo’s strong growth is very impressive considering the massive losses they were dealing with at the beginning of 2009.
Local Tech Wire editor Rick Smith, who has long followed Lenovo, has an interesting and detailed look at Lenovo’s past that I recommend you check out. The most interesting tidbit there is that Lenovo’s growth is primarily from China, with emerging markets and even established markets in EMEA & Asia-Pacific showing increases. The U.S., however, was Lenovo’s only decline in sales, albeit a slight one.
