Another day, another leak; first the next IdeaPad netbook, now the refresh of the svelte ThinkPad T400s. Indicated to be launching in January 2010 (CES anyone?), the T410s will feature some evolutionary changes and they appear to all be for the better.
The overall design will be cleaner, with the subtle Lenovo logo on the exterior gone, the palm rest smoothed out and no seams between the palm rest and speakers. A USB port is added to the left and rear faces, which should bring the total to 5 including the dual USB/eSATA port.
You’ll also notice the exhaust vents on the rear are longer. Lastly, the ThinkLight evolves to a dual-LED setup, which one would assume provides more even lighting across the T410s’ expansive keyboard.
There you have it ladies and gents. Hit the jump for the rest of the photos and stay tuned for more details.

Wow, no more latch on the lid!?! That a pretty bold design change for ThinkPads. I wonder if they’re going to have magnets and/or a hinge that “locks” closed.
I’ve never used a latchless design and liked it, so I find it unsettling that they seem to have removed it. I love how solid the latch feels on my T42, especially compared to other laptops which typically feel flimsy in contrast.
Whoa there folks, who said anything about the latch disappearing? They did clean up the palm rest area, but there will definitely be an LCD latch and it will likely be a traditional latch.
They’re very clear in, say, this picture: http://www.thinkpads.com/wp-content/gallery/thinkpad-t400s/lenovo_thinkpad_t400s_front-lcd-angle.jpg
And very obviously *not* there in this one: http://www.thinkpads.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/lenovo_thinkpad_t410s_leaked-4.jpg
That’s what people are talking about.
Relax, folks:

I’d be terrified if they removed it too though…
I can’t tell from these images. Have they gone to the dark side of 16:9, or are they still on the 16:10 (still not great, but at least slightly better…)?
Looks about the same as 16:10 to me, plus I wouldn’t expect ThinkPads to move to 16:9 until the next major redesign. (ThinkPad SL doesn’t count!)
Why doesn’t it count? They seem to be dropping in the new keyboard for all of them.
Hi there,
What would be of interest to me if this new Model will have a dedicated graphics chip –
The only thing I’m missing with my current T400s.
I wouldn’t bet on it. The T400s chassis is limited in size, which limits what kind of cooling system can be put in place to handle the extra heat of a dedicated GPU and also limits battery size. Even a low end dedicated GPU sucks a lot more power than the Intel integrated chips.
At the end – hope remains
The bigger vent must be there for a reaseon! My System keeps quite cool all time despite of heavy duty work. I expect more powerful graphics – we will see.
Kind regards, mtness
Mobile discrete graphic cards can be very small, and fit within a Thinkpad chassis; my trusty T60 (which is about to be replaced by the T410 when it comes out) is very close in dimensions to the T410, and it has the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 card, which is sufficient to play Left4Dead, Half-Life 2 (medium quality), etc., and which is great for off-loading HD video decoding.
I suppose this is one case where AMD could have an advantage, with the “Fusion” package that puts a real 3D GPU in the same package as the CPU. I’m upgrading either way – but how I wish Intel would field something better than their “GMA” crap.
What about USB 3.0? That’s all I want. The first among HP, Lenovo and Apple that launches a USB 3.0 notebook will get my money.
USB 3 is already showing up in add-on cards for desktop systems, but I wouldn’t expect to see it in laptops even early in 2010. Before 2011? Surely possible, just depends on how the industry moves.
USB 3 is not coming anytime soon, don’t expect it. 2011…
Any chance of better displays?
We’ve had such horrible user responses to the existing T400s screens that we’ve basically stopped buying them. I suppose it’s too much to hope that Lenovo will bring out another 4:3 aspect ratio IPS/Flexview laptop some day…
Just to clarify, are you talking about the T400s product or multiple T400 laptops? Confusing, I know
I wouldn’t expect an upgraded screen, although Lenovo likely uses multiple vendors for the existing screens.
What do your users dislike so much about the T400s display? It’s leaps & bounds above a T400 IMO.
And there is no hope for IPS (except in tablets) or 4:3, sorry. That train left the station a long time ago.
I just bought a R400 with WXGA+ and i am very disappointed in the display. It is bright, but contrast is extremely bad and so is the viewing angle.
Even so the T400s seems to have a slightly better display, i would expect a really satisfying display from a laptop of that price. If the T410s would show any advantage i would consider an upgrade if not, lenovo will very fast lose a new gained customer.
I am glad to here even a reseller is complaining about the display and i hope, this complains reach lenovo.
I am with you, changing monitors from a 4:3 to 16:10 and now the squat 16:9 saves the manufacturers a lot of pixels but makes the screens far less usable for 80 percent of laptop and desktop users. Why, only a small minority of people use the laptop for movies or video, and when they do, videos can show just fine on a 4:3 screen. Just because the video doesn’t show up on the whole screen only shows the terrible reduction of screen territory on the 16:10. Most people are using laptops and desktops today for, Internet usage, where a taller page with no need of scrolling is far superior, ditto for Word processing, desktop publishing. As an important tool, word publishing is by far the most used application on pc s today. Of course you would rather see a whole page than half of one or even a third of one! Same with internet pages! Same with viewing pdfs or e books of course. I don’t think magazine and book formats are going to go to an awkward very wide and very squat format.
Isn’t it great the manufacturers could tell us how advanced the new screens are, how cool they are with the new 16.9 format. Complete bullshit. We are being ripped off and given a product of far less usability, and the makers are saving money on pixels.
I hope some of the major reviewers will begin to get on this subject and maybe a manufacturer like Lenovo or someone else will put out a model line with the 4:3 format for the 80 percent of people who would greatly benefit.
One more note, the netbooks would really benefit from such a design because when the smaller screens are 16:9 they give such a small fraction of the page, they would be much more readable and usable from everything from web surfing to ebooks, pdfs and the like at 4:3 ratios, and they could still be of small size.
Best to all, maybe someone reading this could forward these ideas to both execs and reviewers.
True.
Exactly what I have been thinking of. I despise the 16:9 screens. If Lenove would come out with 4:3 ratio display, they would have another buyer.
Couldn’t agree more! I have been so happy with my 14.1″ T61p that features a great display. Unfortunately, it has become pretty slow recently. So pretty disappointing to see that no more 4:3 with great displays and discrete graphic power and 14″ format being produced by thinkpad. Tried the W500. Display is a catastrophe, a complete rip-off. Weight significantly heaviert than T61p.
I imagine the W500, a 15.4-inch widescreen machine, was indeed heavier than your 14.1-inch widescreen T61. The displays are definitely hit or miss. But you don’t have a 14.1-inch T61p, they don’t exist. You instead likely have a T61 with discrete graphics.
they do. t61p, 14.1, 1400×1050 still rocks (wireless replaced…)
believe me. 14.1 T61p. best thinkpad ever (for my purposes). with discrete graphics. excellent display. 4:3. wish i found a geekfreak who could refurbish that thing to faster cpu and more powerful GPU. really sad, that as I see it, currently no thinkpad matches this profile.
Of course, the other big question here is if it will still have the 1.8″ drive, or finally get a 2.5″ one. I’d like the latter, but fear it will stay the former.
looks like they’re staying with 1.8″ since the hdd bay cover on the left side of the front is the same size as on the T400s

Is the reason Lenovo took their name off the lid because they are selling ThinkPad to Dell?
Heard Dell is going to take it over to replace Vostro.
These pictures are forged. On the third one (http://www.thinkpads.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/lenovo_thinkpad_t410s_leaked-3-150×150.jpg), the author did not implement the twin thinklights, and did not remove the T400s latches. He also did not bother add the second USB port on the left side of picture 1.
