Lenovo ThinkPad X201 Tablet outed in Australia with Core i7

Last week saw another leak of Lenovo’s 2010 roadmap and this week we’ve got some details on the forthcoming ThinkPad X201 Tablet. The X201T showed up at the FCC for its usual certifications, not revealing much besides its existence, but then an Australian retailer decided to list a model that will soon be available for purchase.

The expected 12.1-inch form factor, 8-cell battery, 4GB RAM, etc are found on the X201T, but the truly surprising part is the Intel Core i7 processor. And by surprising, I mean really surprising.

There is a Core i5 in the T410 I’m currently reviewing and while it stays plenty cool, the fan runs quite a bit. It’s obvious it is working hard to keep thermals down. HP’s Envy 15 aluminum-chassis notebook stuffs a powerful Core i7 inside and gives your thighs quite the roasting. While the Envy 15 is very thin, it is also a good deal larger than the X Series Tablet.

Given this is a reseller’s early product page and not an official product listing, I wouldn’t count on the absoluteness of this information. I think we’ll see a Core i5 at best in the X201 Tablet, but the details should all become clear in a few weeks.

EDIT See our diligent readers’ comments below for the reason of my retraction. It is indeed feasible for the X201 Tablet to have a hefty Core i7 stuffed in it and not set your legs on fire.

  1. The i7-620LM is the 25 W with 2.0 GHz base, 2.8 GHz peak and is the slowest and lowest power processor with the 1066 MHz front-side bus. This versus T410 i5-540M? 35 W, 2.53 GHz base, 3.0 GHz peak. The T410 also has the NVIDIA at ~15 W, whereas the X201T looks like it will rely only on the Intel. With both chips on the one die at full tilt there may be an issue with a hotspot, but I doubt that. The X Series are likely to use different fan dynamics so you never know what it’ll sound like in comparison.
The alternative is the i5-540UM 18 W chips with 800 MHz front-side bus, but for me the FSB and RAM performance of the i7-620LM even with a little more fan noise, makes it my pick of the bunch. The i7-620LM and TrackPoint in 13-14″ WXGA+, 8+ cell and SSD is the combo I am waiting for. I believe it will be plenty cool for most tasks, especially development, movies, and surfing if I disable Flash. I would prefer the LE with its ECC RAM, but I doubt they offer it.

There is an ULV version of the i7. I also saw a x200t with a trackpad at Intel’s CES booth with a corei7 chip in it that the rep specifically said was an ULV when I asked.

    Is more information.

I found info on the X201 and X201I here. Just search for X201 and T410s in the website’s search bar. The entries are under the Lenovo category. Although detailed specs are not available, basic info is easily decipherable from the title. Particularly notable are the X201I being under 900 bucks and the Core i7 version of the X201 available for under 1500 dollars.

  4. You guys are absolutely right – it would be possible with the 620. I hadn’t studied up on the Arrandale TDP’s and stand corrected!

The mobile Arrandale naming scheme is incredibly confusing…
