Slew of new Lenovo PCs for sale, including ThinkPad X201 & Tablet

by ThinkPads on March 2, 2010

Our sister-siteĀ eCoupons alerted us that some of Lenovo’s recently announced PCs are now available for purchase, including the ThinkPad X201, ThinkPad X201s, and ThinkPad X201 Tablet ultraportable notebooks.

We covered the announcement of the new X201 models last week, citing the major revisions as Core i5 and i7 processors, an updated fingerprint reader and the optional touchpad. Lenovo also recently updated their handy PSREF documents, which confirm to us that the X201 models officially support a maximum of 8GB RAM, via two 4GB sticks. This is great news for power users, who can now really take advantage of a 64-bit operating system.

Also of note is that the controversial, and optional, touchpad on the X201 is a $20 option. The X201 Tablet is particularly limited in its configuration options: you can’t even get an 8-cell battery, so expect those offers to expand in the coming weeks.

On the opposite side of Lenovo’s laptop spectrum, the value line G455 and G555 laptops are also now for sale. We knew at launch that both would be powered by AMD dual core processors, with the smaller G455 starting at $699 and the G555 at $729.

Lastly, you can also pick up the refreshed IdeaPad Y460. The overall design appears the same as the IdeaPad Y50 when I reviewed it, but with more powerful Core i3 and i5 processors and ATI graphics.

Hah, base price of x201s has dropped a couple hundred bucks since annonucement last week, and tablet version has gone up a pretty big chunk. Nice to see a G450/550 successor and no prob with the switch to AMD processors. But where’s the dual core x100e?

And wow, the x201s comes with the wxga+ screen standard, I didn’t notice that earlier. It was $150 extra before. And the base unit comes with a 2gb single dimm, instead of two 1gb dimms so you have to swap out both in order to upgrade. The base configuration is actually pretty good, so if the usual 15% coupons appear soon, we’re at about $1150, which is just a couple hundred over the x200s at its lowest discounted price. This is pretty good news and there’s probably an x201s in my future. Now if they bring back the $100 ultrabase deal that was available for a while…

Guys,

Can anyone confirm if they’ve messed with the keyboard on the X201/X201s like they did with the T400s? I’ve been using a T400s and I DONT like it at all. I’m used to the good old T61 and was looking to upgrade to the X201….. now I’m not sure if the keyboards are the same at all…

I’m still kinda leaning towards buying the X200, there are a few good deals out there. The confusion on the keyboards is delayin my purchase though.

Appreciate any help I can get :o )

The X200 and X201 series all share the same keyboard. Nothing has changed since the last generation.

I don’t really understand your hatred towards the T400s keyboard though. Is it the new formatting for the keys? It seems to be up to the standards of quality keybaords we have come to expect from the Thinkpad line.

Prajith March 3, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Hatred would be too strong a word Phelan ;) I’m still using a Thinkpad aren’t I ? :)

Maybe its just me; but the older keyboard had a feeling that somehow felt ‘predictive’ in nature. That’s probably cos I’ve used the same keyboard for years and now my fingers try to resist the change. I just cant seem to type that quickly (and accurately) anymore and the keyboard in general seem stiffer. Therefore; the formatting of the keys may have something to do with it.

BTW – Did a bit of research this morning on the keyboard and you’re absolutely right. Nothing has changed – so I went ahead and ordered the X200 – there’s still a few of them available online at good deals.

I believe that Thinkpad keyboards are made by up to 3 different manufacturers. Chicony, ALPS, and NMB make them. They all have a different feel and can be identified by either the phyiscal mechanism under the keys or by model number of the keyboard. ALPS (China) are the softest, Chicony is in the middle and loud, and NMB (Thailand) is the crisp and quiet. There is no “best” manufacturer. It just depends on taste.

Phelan March 3, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Oh, BTW, there is no way to specifically request a NMB/Alps/Chicony keyboard. It is random. But it is possible to distinguish which is which if you are handling the Thinkpad.

Then Chicony it is!

I’m disappointed that there wasn’t a clearance sale on X200s stock, as happened with prior model groups. Where did you find remaining X200′s?

Prajith March 4, 2010 at 6:58 am

Agree. I’ve been lookin around for a decent price for a month before I landed this deal on the J&R website. My X200 cost me 849$. That’s about a 120$ more than the Thanksgiving prices from last year. They may still have a few in stock, I just bought mine yesterday.

Please do check out CDW as well. They have plenty of X200/x200s with varying configs avaliable. Don’t forget to check the ‘In Stock’ filter option though :)

Hope this helps.

Thanks, good to know there is stock out there in X200′s. Can’t say the pricing is discounted, but it isn’t bad either. Too bad there aren’t any X200s’s or the 1440×900 screen option, but I’ve been locked out / priced out before and lived to tell the story, so I’ll just wait, again.

I don’t see any reason to buy an x200s at this point unless the price is amazing. The x201s is a real improvement and once there are some discount coupons, the price diff over a closeout x200s won’t be all that high.
