System Update ver5 seems to skip power management & others
It's been a while, but I wanted to set my T60 2007 up for possible sale. After installing a new copy of a purchased OEM Windows 7 64 bit, I tried to get System Update install he usual things like power management, fingerprint, etc. but lots of features just did not get installed. Has System Update b...

Re: W500 Switchable Graphics not working-can't select ATI adaptr
[quote="emeraldgirl08"]Glad to hear you found a happy medium :) I do not foresee certified drivers for our T/R/W/400/500 generation ThinkPads with switchable graphics. It seems that Lenovo, Microsoft, Intel, and AMD have moved on and are concentrating on the more recent chipsets and their accompanyi...

Re: W500 Switchable Graphics not working-can't select ATI adaptr
Based on some threads I've seen, the W500 switchable graphics feature is rather flaky and hard to manage. I've switched mine off, because the graphics card would crash on a lot of videos. With switchable graphics turned off, the crashes went away. I do not use high level video or photo editing softw...

Re: recommended HDD for W520 ultrabay?
Go for the UltraBay option as one can also set the power settings (Windows/Power) to have the drive spin down after 5 minutes or even less, if desired. This will take care of any noise from the drive. Since the drive will be used for backup/archives it will not be used very often, I assume. It only ...

Answering my own question....found on another forum. Turn off "Speed Step" in BIOS. No performance hit that I notice, and the annoying sound is gone, gone, gone!

Odd high-pitched chattering on W500 64 bit but on VISTA only
It's a ThinkPad W500 4064A12, running Vista 64 bit on a SSD. I notice that there is a frequent high-pitched "chattering" at times when the machine is running. The chattering comes and goes. It is less pronounced when running Balanced vs. High Performance power settings. Balanced is quieter. Power Sa...

Re: ThinkPad W520 Intel SSD - constant drive access & superfetch
I "splurged" and bought a 256 gig SSD to run in my W500 UltraBay slot. I notice no such distortion or delays when playing music from there. I have not played music from my main drive which has the operating system on it. I do not run WinAmp, so cannot tell you if that is the problem. Yes, I do disab...

Re: ThinkPad W520 Intel SSD - constant drive access & superfetch
I have been running SSDs on my ThinkPads for about three years now. Intel (as you may have noticed) recommends disabling SuperFetch, and others also suggest clearing the "allow indexing" checkbox in the drive's properties menu, since the SSD does not need to index, thanks to its inherent speed. (but...

Re: w520, hard drives spinning down seemingly randomly
Have you checked Power Options/Advanced to see when the settings tell the drives to stop? One can set those the any number of time outs. My cooling fan spins up and and down, too. Sometimes it's hard to tell if the sound is the fan or the hard drive.

Re: Fn+Spacebar: What now??
I just do Fn+Spacebar again to return the screen to normal size. Not necessary to reboot at all. Works on the native T60 screen as well as external screen using DVI output from dock. Also, sometimes the screen resolution can become "stuck" in a lower resolution setting, giving the impression that th...

Re: Random shutdown/crashes
I ran into similar partition error problems on an external USB drive, as well as a drive in the Ultra Bay on my W500 when running Windows 8 CP 64 bit. After some Microsoft Updates ran, that oddity "seemed" to stop. (I can offer no explanation for this behavior, but running chkdsk corrected the disk ...

Running Windows 8 on a T60 (64 bit frankenpad) with two gig of ram. Setup on a 80 gig SSD with separate partition for documents and other personal files. I've had a couple of Seagate 250 gig hybrid drives since 2010 and they work well. Quiet and responsive. About 80% as fast as a solid state drive. The latest versions are probably even better.

Yep...Windows 8 running now on my W500 with a SSD. Faster than Windows 7 when run on the same SSD! Some confusion with new menu commands, but I'm gradually getting the hang of it. I discovered an old Vista ATI driver (7vd541ww.exe) that I use for the display port video output to my external monitor....

TPFancontrol on Windows 8 with a ThinkPad W500-yes it works!
Just thought I would pass along some fun news. (well...fun for me, anyway!) I've installed Windows 8 Beta using a SSD, and ThinkPad Fan control runs just dandy on that OS. No hitches or glitches that I have detected! I even managed to track down a driver (7vd541ww.exe) for the display port on the W5...

robert213 is correct: Windows 7 disk management is a very good way to create that new partition. If your cd drive is currently listed as D, it will be bumped down to E during the process.

Re: weird thing happen after recover C partition
I have run into odd drive letter changes from time to time, also. It is an easy matter to go to Computer Management and change driver letter and path to the letter that you want. It will stay that way. I am guessing that Windows will sometimes rename the drives (or partitions) at the low level, and ...

(Out of curiosity - run the commands ver or winver. What do they report?) I cannot answer that because I have already removed Windows 8 from the ThinkPad I was using. I had other things to do with it. Another main reason to stop using Windows 8; it would not run with an external monitor, and my 72 y...

Windows 8 developer's: am I the first kid on the block?
More observations as of sep 18 2011: - performance with an older 160 gig, 7200 rpm hard drive instead of a solid state drive is pretty good. About 80% as fast as the SSD. Boot up is around 25 seconds with the mechanical drive. -TPFancontrol runs very well on the T60 with Windows 8. The cooling fan s...

Have you tried going in the "front door" via Windows Explorer?
On my machine that is:

then right click rnr_simple.exe and run as admin.
Just an idea for what it may be worth...
