Re: Nvidia NVS 4200m Video Driver on Ubuntu 10.10/11.04?
I just recently got a T420 with the Nvidia NVS 4200m video card. I'm having a hell of a time getting the drivers install and getting it to run. I've tried both Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04. Ideally I'd like to use 10.10 so I'll probably move my focus back to there. I read somewhere that it worked out of ...

Re: Thinkpad fan control
Hello everybody, I am quite a newbie in linux trying to find enough reasons to leave Windows. Running Linux mint and ubuntu a I tried to control my thinkpad fan because in linux the fan goes still at 3600 rpm - so I installed various thinkpad fan control apps (see http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_...

Re: Notebook that can be temporarily silenced?
The noisiest part I noticed, when using my T500 in a quiet room, was HDD (5400rpm). It's pretty quiet and shouldn't disturb any recording as long as the microphone is about 1-2 meters away from the laptop. This problem can of course be "fixed" by using an SSD drive. The fan runs at ~1900rpm during n...

Re: Notebook that can be temporarily silenced?
All the common sources of noises can be easily silenced, but what is hard to silence is C2D (and probably others) CPU whining noise (high-pitch). That said, "critical" voice recordings should be done in an isolated room without electrical devices anyway.

Probably using copy&paste from here, the file actual file has tabs whereas the patch posted here is malformed (uses spaces), so either comment that check manually or get a correct patch.boltzmann wrote:What am I doing wrong?

Re: UBUNTU 11.04 WARNING!
I'm recommending that my Ubuntu-using friends stick with 10.04 (LTS). It's supported for years to come, and it's now in its fully-stable support cycle so I don't expect any breakages. Everyone else? Well... it's Debian time! I'm actually recommending users to go for Xubuntu. I've tried both Ubuntu ...

Re: Hows Ubuntu 10.04 run on a thinkpad t40?
Hello, I have felt a little guilty lately. I have a pirated version of Windows XP on my thinkpad. But, the only think i use it for is to surf the web, check my email, checkout whats going on on facebook, and thats about it. Ubuntu can do all that, so I was thinking of installing it on my IBM...

I can't reproduce any freeze before reboot/shutdown on debian squeeze / wheezy (testing) / sid (unstable) with 2.6.38.6. I can, however, reproduce other bugs that were introduced in .38 and are fixed in .39, so I'm currently waiting on .37 as well

Re: Disabling trackpad when trackpoint is in use. (Debian-X220)
If you use the KDE desktop, there is a checkbox for "Input devices" that disables the TrackPad. Gnome does not seem to have the same functionality out of the box. See if the following is any help: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Synaptics_TouchPad_driver_for_X The problem isn't in disabling the touch...

Re: Wake-from-sleep issues on R51 with Fedora 14
Tools in the "pm-utils" package have some so-called quirks which you can use to tune suspend/hibernation process. See ie. "man pm-suspend".
Sometimes the best solution is to simply let the kernel do all the work (which works for me, unlike pm-utils), try "echo mem > /sys/power/state".

Re: Think I finally tanked my Thinkpad (A22m)
I would be handy to know the exact error, ie. what does that "IRQ line" say - use paper and pencil. You can try boot off a sysrescd (http://www.sysresccd.org/Download) and use vga=0. If it still doesn't boot, try disabling APIC and ACPI completely, as a temporary workaround, add "acpi=off noapic" to...

Re: Usable time on battery: T61 Fedora 14
When I boot, I see the nVidia logo - does that mean I have the proprietary driver, even though I used "yum install nvidia"? Yes, the logo is quite clear indication. That is interesting. I thought motors were heavy users of electricity and would drain the battery quite quickly. I had my OpenOffice a...

Re: Usable time on battery: T61 Fedora 14
CPU isn't in fact the problem, something like C2D can run at max frequency without really high jump in terms of Watts. The problem is probably (95% of all cases I know of) tied to the graphic card and the linux "noveau" (or 2D "nv") doesn't really help it -- I'm not sure if "yum install nvidia" inst...

Re: Keep my T500 alive or no?
I imagine any overclocking would need a change of thermal grease + external cooling system, as my T500 is already way too hot without overclocking (even with CPU undervolting) - the plastic between both speakers (under the display) seems to be bending already, not to mention the use of an external k...

Re: Wine crashes
Turns out that the issue is relevant for me as well, since the debian squeeze->wheezy/sid update. The X server simply segfault-ed. At first, I thought it's an intel driver issue (2.13.0+xx -> 2.14.0 update), but it happens with the radeon driver as well. I've managed to create a somewhat usable back...

Re: T400 - Linux random shutdown
Kernel 2.6.35 (or Ubuntu's version of it?) is royally broken for thinkpads Now that you mentioned it, I remember some Ubuntu forum posts about it, but it's probably just ubuntu-specific. Re: T400 - Linux random shutdown
As for the suspend problems - there are tons of things that can go wrong during suspend, especially if you're using a lot of drivers, even the ones you don't usually need. I had problems with 2.6.32 @ T500 (intel graphics), but they disappeared after configuring my first custom kernel for this machi...

Re: Thinkpad T500 - chassis material
I'd think it'd be a bad idea to try and remove part of the rollcage. The 'damaged' portion becomes the weak spot most likely to fracture in an impact. Any particular reason you want the Atheros card? Hackintoshing? Well I don't think removing a 1mm layer from a screw holder will make any impact on ...

Re: Thinkpad T500 - chassis material
It's magnesium alloy. Are you sure the Atheros card doesn't fit into it by default? I think some T500's shipped with Atheros adapters. I'm sure, I have tried. I had to remove the Modem Daughter Card, so I could move it's cord a bit, but the atheros card still doesn't fit, because it has a 1mm thick...

Thinkpad T500 - chassis material
Hello, I'd like to ask if anyone can provide any info on the T500 chassis (called "Structure frame" by the Hardware Maintenance Manual) - especially on it's properties. Re: T410 - Cisco 64 Bit VPN Client takes 2 hours to run
Try alternative VPN clients maybe? One tool is called Shrewsoft, which I tend to prefer myself. The other is VPNC Front End. I have only used them for x86 systems, but know they each have x64 support. The problem is most likely in the author's company policy, you can't simply use an incompatible VP...

Congratulations. Re: Ubuntu 10.10 on my T500 with ATI GPU
The driver I use came with the kernel. There was no additional install needed. It doesn't have as much performance as the official fglrx driver, but it's close and allows me to use the latest available kernel (2.6.38) instead of waiting for AMD to update their driver (which can take months). Though ...

What driver do you use? AMD/ATI's official fglrx of the opensource (radeon/radeonhd) one? Do you use KMS?
My T500 runs fine on 1680x1050 with the radeon kernel drm driver.
Post here your "xrandr" command output.
