Can anyone look at my pics and confirm if t480 lid is magnesium?

https://imgur.com/a/je3mIU1 has vids and pics.

Thank you. I tried entering the serial number / MTM on the lenovo website, but it doesn't give the LID MATERIAL info (though it gave other details like CPU, battery, etc).

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

There is no need to use any specific program to find out the current BIOS version on any Thinkpad. There is a wealth of information readily avaialble via the /sys file system: # ls /sys/class/dmi/id/ bios_date board_vendor ec_firmware_release product_uuid bios_release board_version modalias product...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

He ran a specific fwupd command, one that updates the IME firmware. I don't get why he doesn't use it to check for BIOS/UEFI updates, since the Arch wiki page I linked to in my earliest post has the proper commands. fwupdmgr refresh Checks Linux Vendor firmware Service (LVFS) for updates ~$ fwupdmg...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

What's wrong with the geteltorito method? You only need to make 1 USB-stick under Linux and use that on all T480 machines. Here's another version: How to update Lenovo BIOS from Linux without using Windows It sounds like geletorito is simple -- just one usb stick "flashed" in linux. perhaps I shoul...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

I think you can install on a USB. Can you use another ssd to be safe? I only have one internal storage: an SSD. I have two other storage mediums: an 8GB thumb drive and a 2TB external USB hard drive. Or just do Hirens. I successfully use Hirens on Ventoy. okay, I'll look up "hirens on ventoy". I'm ...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

If the laptops were ever originally equipped with Windows then they are still licensed for Windows and you could have that, if you wanted (I understand you do not). But even unlicensed Windows is capable of running a BIOS flash. You could even install a modified Windows eg. Tiny10 by NTDEV. Sorry I...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

If you go into BIOS setup you'll know for sure what version you have, then compare that to what's available on Lenovo. Even then why not just use Windows or Hirens for the BIOS update? You can do it totally offline. Microsoft won't know anything or care. Thank you for your reply. My three t480 lapt...

Re: updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

Lenovo-ThinkPad-T480-ConsumerMEFirmware-11.8.93.4323.cab That's the Intel Management Engine firmware update. If that's the only one that fwupd found, then you probably have the latest BIOS. You can go to fwupd.org and check it yourself: https://fwupd.org/lvfs/search?value=thinkpad+t480 You wrote " ...

Either use a CD/DVD-drive or use geteltorito to make a bootable USB stick.
And see this: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&p=873556

Is the method axur-delmeria suggested (fwupd) better than the geteltorito method?

There's Fwupd for updating firmware on Linux (needs UEFI mode): https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fwupd hi axur-delmeria, I ran a fwupd command on my linux, but i think it's just to update the Intel. this is the command i ran: sudo fwupdmgr --allow-older --allow-reinstall install Lenovo-ThinkPad-T48...

updating T480 bios without Windows (I use Linux)

I bought a set of three t480 laptops from an auction. They didn’t come with any hard drive. I have an SSD that runs Linux. How can I update the BIOS/firmware without Windows? I've tried charging Battery A in all three laptops and it gives the same lighting pattern.

detachable battery does not charge. White light, then amber, then off.

I bought three T480 laptops from an auction. I noticed that when I plug in a charger (USB cable C) into one of them, I see this pattern: 1. The battery LED will be off for about one or two seconds, 2. and then the white LED will be on for about three seconds, 3. and then the LED will be off for abou...

charger says 65W on one side and PD 33W on another. But T480 says it's got lower wattage than original.

I bought a off-lease Thinkpad T480 laptop. It didn't come with a charger. I understand that the original charger is a 65W charger. I got a charger that looks like this: https://imgur.com/a/egK1Ctt One one side, it says "65W GaN". On the side with the ports, it says, "PD 33W" On another side, it says...

Re: Questions about minimum/best specs for power adapter for T480

I can't say. It says "PD 33W" above the USB-C port; that could mean it can only supply 33 Watts through either port, with a combined limit of 65W rather than 65W on either port by itself. The modular design of that adapter seems to suggest its design is focused more on charging small mobile devices...

Re: Questions about minimum/best specs for power adapter for T480

They need a 20V/3.25A charger, not a dinky phone charger. Is that the minimum voltage and minimum ampere? I ask in part because my power bank with the following specs activated the orange light beside the USB Type-C [prt (I think this light indicates it is charging): Battery: 3.7 V/ 20,000 mAH / 74...

Thank you realblackstuff,

Will this work just as well as the power adapters that look like a brick?

Thank you, Terminator, for your helpful reply. Based on what you said, I will not be getting a 45 watt charger. Questions about minimum/best specs for power adapter for T480

I acquired a Thinkpad T480. It doesn’t come with any power adapter. Question 1: What are the minimum specs I need to charge the battery, even if it’s a slow charge? Question 2: What are the best specs I need to charge the battery as fast as possible? Question 3: With battery removed, what specs do I...

Shopping for HDD caddy for E570: 9.5mm or 12.7mm?

I have a ThinkPad E570. I'm shopping for a HDD caddy to be inserted into the cavity of where the disc drive used to be.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001297189494.html has two sizes:
A) 9.5mm
B) 12.7mm

Which is the right size?
