Possibly thinking of getting a new ThinkPad :D

#1 Post by oeuvre » Thu Jul 19, 2012 10:45 pm

Hey, so I've got 3 laptops and a ThinkPad tablet.

The T42 is staying as it is, never gave me an issue.

Then I have a 32GB ThinkPad Tablet that I just updated to ICS. It has the pen and I rarely use the thing so I was thinking of selling it. Not sure exactly how much I could get for it, but I'm presuming around $350 or so.

I have a 2007 MacBook, 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 120GB HD with Snow Leopard/Windows 7 dual boot. 13" 1280x800 res. Battery lasts around 2 hours. Don't need to have 3 laptops so I figure maybe I can sell it for around $300-350 as well, judging by the prices of similar 2007 MacBooks on eBay.

My main laptop is a 2009 MacBook Pro 17" 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo 8GB RAM 640GB HD with Lion/Windows 7 dual boot. 1920x1200 res, battery lasts 5-6 hours. Found similar ones on eBay going for $1300+

So I figure to sell all 3 of these devices and get either a new T or W series for video editing and Photoshopping. I LOVE my T42 but even my MBP slows me down with video editing. It's rather a pain. I use the Adobe suite and a bunch of free converters and editors.

The MBP spoiled me bad with its display. So for the T or W, I'd hope to go for a 1920x1080 res screen, at least a 3rd gen i7, probably stick with the 4GB RAM and buy 12 or 16GB myself since Lenovo charges an unbelievable amount for RAM.

Now I know for a fact that I want an SSD and an HD. I don't need an SSD bigger than 64GB really, but the HD must be at least 500GB and 7200RPM. Thoughts?

I might suggest if you're not planning on using WWAN, picking up a mSATA SSD. It's a small SSD that plugs into the miniPCI slot on the motherboard. Once installed, it's seen as another hard drive. The benefit of this setup is you can keep the platter drive in the main bay for storage where speed is not as important. If you wish to forgo the optical drive, you could opt to do 2x1TB with the modular caddy.

I don't need WWAN, but I was wondering what if I got an HD in the ultrabay and bought an SSD for the main bay, then getting an external USB DVD burner. Would that work too?

Yes, that would work as well and it's effectively what I did with my T420 in my signature. I already had the external DVD drive (portable, 12.6 ounces, powered off usb only) from my X61.
