Lenovo Driver Sweep. *LenovoSupport severely limited!*

#1 Post by ganon11000 » Sat Aug 09, 2014 2:16 pm

It seems as if Lenovo has removed ALL drivers for XP Era machines.
I have confirmed this is true for the A31, X41 and 3000 C200.

Mod edit: changed title (added: *LenovoSupport severely limited!*)
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

I can't access any drivers at the moment...

I would guess it's yet another reorganization of the support site, and all the stuff is going to be back online, eventually.

Thats kind of weird, because the X40 is still there: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product ... =Downloads

Anyway, as dr_st said, the new site seems to be still in the making, so they may still add some things. At the moment of course, it seems like the T40/R50/X40 are the oldest machines still there.

Hoping it is not gone for good, my favorite page is gone as well: support.lenovo.com/en_US/landing.page?qpq=XXXX-YYY (where XXXX-YY refers to the product id or type of a given Thinkpad).

Example output for a 2007-1ZG:

Code: Select all

2007-1ZG: Based on 2007-CTO: T7600(2.33GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB
7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5250, DVD,
Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure
chip, Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro
If this type of query will be made impossible, there will be no easy way anymore to look up a given machine's characteristics.

I, too use this URL to look up systems. It's much faster than waiting for the entire page to load and then using the Quick Path entry box. If I remember correctly, the next-to-the-last change made to the support site also (temporarily) removed this query. Hopefully when all of the latest changes have been implemented we can figure out a substitute.

Whatever they are doing, they are definitely RUINING it for all of us who like to look up other Thinkpad models.
Lenovo, how BLOODY STUPID can you get?
Their lack-of-support website is SO SLOW now, that you can probably have dinner, before you get any reply!
And if you do it is probably this: The page isn't redirecting properly!
Thanks a lot, you Lenovo morons!

That would be fine, except many old product IDs don't show there. I sincerely hope it is just a temporary glitch due to site maintenance, and not a permanent breakage.

As someone who obviously has an inside connection with Lenovo, maybe you could explain to us their perpetual need to fix things which are not broken. :)

They changed the URL system for this type of query, the new URL looks like this:
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/product ... 0/4180/ck7 (Using "4180-CK7" for this example)
Not applicable to my former T60 example 2007-1ZG, unfortunately.

Searching via support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/search doesn't provide any results for any of the T60 and T61 PRODUCT-ID's/TYPE's i tried: "No Results Found - Please check and try again".

Guess the good times are finally over. :(

@dr_st,
I dunno, I may have some insight, but I don´t work for them, so I can´t know it all^^ Ask them, or better, give them feedback: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Feedback-on ... 2429#M2212

I was fine with the old site, and I didn´t need this change. One thing I did notice is that the mobile version of this new site is much better than the old site, but thats the only minor improvement I have seen so far...

I hope they don't get rid of the TYPE lookup for the older machines, I didn't even know about that shortcut that rumbero posted!!
It wouldn't be fun at all trying to figure out which T4x has an IPS screen, or guessing if it came with a powerful processor/ram when browsing the eBay with sellers not knowing how to figure out a BIOS screen.

Heh, if I ever apply to Lenovo I shouldn't say anything at all about me being a registered user here.
They may throw away my application, as I am one who prefers the older units than (most of) the new.

No Drivers for A Series on Lenovo's Website

#16 Post by luke4010 » Sun Aug 10, 2014 8:45 pm

Hi All

I recently acquired an A22m in very nice shape for next to nothing, and am currently doing a fresh install of Windows 2000. I went onto Lenovo's support page and after selecting Laptop on the first category, the sub-category for which Thinkpad series it is part of doesn't have a selection for "Thinkpad A Series", but seems to have every other series listed. I went on the support chat and was told to call technical support and once I did that, was told by technical support to search their forum. Nothing showed up, and I thought I should post here first instead. Do you think this is a mistake, or are they trying to stop all support for the outdated A series? I just want my laptop to work.
Thanks,
Luke

As of Sunday August 10, 2014 the let's say less-than-brilliant minds at Lenovo have deleted ANY drivers/support pages for ANY machines older than T40.

If you take a look at this page:

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products?c=1

And actually start searching by model (say T43p, not 2668-Q1U) here's what you'll find:

a) The earliest model "supported" is T40 however, all the driver files apart from "Access IBM User's Guide" are gone

b) This also holds true for T41/p and T42/p. The oldest model for which one can actually download a driver from the site is T43.

c) Every and any older model regardless of series (A31, T30, R32...) is just outright GONE like it never existed.

I hope that someone comes to their senses and restores the missing portion...but am not holding my breath.

Cheers,

It's funny how some lenovo-critical people I know saw this coming. I for my part have saved all drivers I need for old models that I like and might buy again on a external HDD. For those who didn't, you better try to get your hands on some good old fashioned driver CD's.

All the drivers would be too good. I'll need to check which models I have, but I know for sure that I have the Win 7 drivers for the X30 and Win 2000 drivers for the X20. And a few newer models as well of course. (X301, T61)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news - even for me, but I emailed Lenovo support yesterday and got the following reply
Dear Valued Customer,
Thank you for your feedback.

Please be informed ThinkPad A series already end of life. We are no longer support and already removed from our support site.

Thank you for contacting the Lenovo Web Content Team. http://support.lenovo.com
It seems that they aren't likely ever going to put back up the drivers for the older machines, and that seems very stupid. Other manufacturer websites (Dell, HP, Gateway, etc) haven't removed drivers because the machine is old, so why would Lenovo do this? Thankfully, I have a folder for my A31 with all the drivers but have been searching for the drivers for my A22m on Google and using Google cache on a Lenovo driver download site and it does work... for now. Why do they try to fix something that isn't broke?
Thanks,
Luke

I can totally understand them not wanting to spend another minute of their support staff time on the ancient models, but removing content makes zero sense. They should just post the old documents / drivers online in a fixed repository that's never gets changed/updated and the disclaimer that it is no longer supported and that they hold no responsibility whatsoever. This would make everyone happy enough.
