Soft rim TrackPoint cap for chiclet ThinkPads?

#1 Post by twistero » Mon Dec 07, 2015 4:54 pm

I've been using a T440s for work lately. I would like to switch the TrackPoint cap from the default soft dome to soft rim, but apparently the new chiclet keyboard uses "low-profile" TrackPoint caps that are shorter than classic ones, and a quick Google search doesn't turn up any low-profile caps other than soft dome.

Does Lenovo not make the full variety of TrackPoint caps for chiclet keyboards?

If you have a spare (or 2), set the two next to one another and cut off the difference from the 'tall' one.

Turns out it takes a bit more than that. Apart from cutting the side wall shorter, the corner standoffs inside the hole must be removed as well so that the cap actually sit low enough and does not touch the screen when closed.
The modded soft rim cap feels better than the default soft dome, but not as good as classic soft rim on a classic keyboard because it's so much lower. Pic link

A quick peek at the Lenovo Store reveals that you can get a Trackpoint Cap Collection (all three styles; two of each) or a 10 pack of Low Profile Soft Dome, either one for $10. Like you, I'm assuming the Low Profile means the newer chicklet keyboards. Which leaves the question: Are the ones in the Collection also Low Profile? For that, you will probably have to call them or use the Chat window which seems to constantly pop up when visiting the page. Seems a waste to get the collection when all you really what is one style. Perhaps it's time to peruse eBay?
