Takedown request from PC-Doctor

#1 Post by rkawakami » Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:10 pm

Up until a few months ago, IBM and then Lenovo, had the PC Doctor diagnostic programs freely available for downloading. My understanding is that the contract between Lenovo and PC-Doctor was not renewed the early part of this year. At that time, Lenovo removed all versions from their support site. For the last year or so I've been hosting a copy of the 1ETY48WW.EXE file on my personal web site. This is the PC Doctor for DOS version that covered a majority of the older systems (A30 to T60). I did this when the Lenovo support site was unavailable for some time. Yesterday I received an email from the Trademarks Administrator of PC-Doctor demanding that I cease and desist with the distribution of their software. As a result I have been forced to remove all of the PC Doctor files I've been hosting. All links to PC Doctor files I've posted here will now be dead. It was my intention to provide these files as a courtesy to Thinkpad owners and have never charged anything for them. Most of you know that I've promoted this useful diagnostic suite when faced with some problems with your laptops. Please note that the takedown notice I received appears to addresses all forms of internet distribution so don't ask me to email the files to you.

At this time, it is my personal opinion and suggestion that forum members NOT post links in public to any of the PC Doctor files you might find by searching on the net. Those resources may also be taken down.

If upgrading our systems, is there a way to retain the version we have?

I ask as I have a t61p with Win 7/32, and I was going to upgrade to 64 bit before Win 8 came out. Since I have to do a clean install, I was planning on downloading the Thinkvantage package again from Lenovo. Anyway to preserve it, or I'll just lose it?

Well, if you installed the 32-bit version, then I doubt it could be made to run on 64-bit even if you had it, since there was a 64-bit specific version too. You may actually have the installer retained on the drive somewhere (perhaps in two or more places), but if 32-bit, then you're stuck unless you can find the 64-bit version somewhere else.

Ah, yes, of course. Since it's a diagnostic it would need to be 64-bit specific. Thanks.

Bumping this as I've updated my original post with MD5 checksums in case anyone wants to double-check the validity of the .ISO files.

I'm confused. Lenovo ThikVantage Toolbox Diagnostics says "Powered by PC Doctor." Are they back together?

No, that's the software being discussed here. PC-Doctor became more customized for Lenovo and was re-branded as Lenovo System Toolbox. You just still have it installed. However, if you wanted to uninstall it, you can't get it from Lenovo anymore. They have created their own new app called Lenovo Solution Center to replace it.

With Lenovo's app? That's debatable.

Is it true that PC Doctor will only work if you have the original "Hidden Partition" installed on the hard disc? I seem to remember reading somewere that "PC Doctor DOS" used the hidden partition to get information from. :?:

No.

PC Doctor for DOS will work even if there's not a hard drive installed in the system, it's a bootable CD.
