Thinkpad user mods

#1 Post by Cat5 » Tue Oct 05, 2004 1:11 pm

Well, let me start a first thread :)

It isn't concretly preformance but it can be (Swapping processors, solid state discs, and so on.), So i am wondering, did anyone mod his machine? I saw litlserenity's Solidstate machine. Anyone else?

I daresay that, with the exception of my still (so far!) virgin T40, I've gotten under the hood of all of my Thinkpads to one extent or another going back to my (133MHz) 701C and 755 machines.

I was one of the first to crack the 288MB memory ceiling on the 600E, and upgrade the processor to a PII 400MHz. My attempts at getting one to run reliably with a PIII upgrade have been fruitless, sad to say.

I'm the proud owner of the famous (infamous?) PIII 850MHz 600X with 576MB RAM and a 7K60 HD. (I've also got a 1/2 dozen 600Xs that are in the process of being upgraded to PIII 800MHz CPUs for eventual sale.) I'm also pursuing installing combo WiFi/modem mini-PCI cards in them as well as strategically placed antennae.

I've just taken delivery of an A30p that's jacked up to have a look at what makes it go. Further details as they develop.

I've got a stable of "FrankenPads" that have suffered CPU, display and memory transplants, primarily T2x series machines. I'm awaiting delivery on a WiFi antennae equipped SXGA+ display that will be grafted onto a "spare" T21 lower unit.

Enough? Do others have similar tales? I'd love to hear about them, regardless of whether the results were good, bad or indifferent.

Regards,

James

@ JHEM

What about the Transnote modes ? Can a Transnote be used with a 10,4" 1024x768 Res. LCD screen ? Is this mode possible ?

I'd love to see a mod to take my X20's USB 1.1 to 2.0

That would mean changing the USB interface on the mobo.. Not possible...
Now, i've got a one that is possible... External wlan antenna connector.... Anyone thought of that?

Nope, haven't thought of that but what about this:

A mod to increase RAM in the X20 by any means?

That's something I plan on pursuing when and if I get a testbed Transnote.

The 4MB ATI Mobility-M video chip has the "oomph" to drive an XGA display, the problem is finding a compatible one.

It would have to be a touch screen...! And if it would have a brighter backlight WOW!
I love my TN, use it everywhere I go, even during a cruise on a sailing ship, going around Mallorca etc. Have installed 60GB HDD works fine; ditto XP Pro (SP2).

Hi JHEM,
I'm also pursuing installing combo WiFi/modem mini-PCI cards in them as well as strategically placed antennae.
I fooling around with that idea too! Ebay has a seller that sell the antennas for like $15.00. I thought about placing them around the inside base of the notebook instead of around the frame of the LCD display! What is your thoughts on this?

How about the 600X bios; has it been update so it can recognized the mini-pc card as a 802.11 a/b/g?

Those were my concerns that I needed to know before I could begin the project.

What about being able to connect an external antenna to your TP WITHOUT trying to drill a hole in the TP for the external connector/cable. It has to be possible somehow. I'm using my old Dell I8100 with a Orinoco Gold Card 802.11b so I just use the external antenna port but after the TP arrives on Tuesday, the card will be no more. Anyone have any ideas?

use a cheap access point and keep the thinkpad close to it, then you get wireless to wireless to wireless but won't have to to make any mods.

Re: Solid state disks... I don't know if this is what you had in mind, but a simple and inexpensive way to create one is with a Compact Flash (CF) card memory and a CF card - to PC (PCMCIA) card adapter. I've been running a 256MB solid state hard drive for quite a while in my 365x using this approach. It's helpful for getting large files into and out of my machine (which has no CD drive), among other uses. WIN98 treats this drive just like a "regular" hard drive.
