On site warranty & international coverage

#1 Post by Alejandro Audisio » Mon Jun 13, 2011 1:21 pm

If you purchase a 3 year Priority Onsite Warranty from Lenovo, do you get international coverage for parts & service...? Example, you are oustide the USA and need service/repairs.... lets assume you are in a country with local Lenovo service, will the US purchased Warranty work...?

Nowadays all Thinkpads have all their warranties international (at least I haven't seen one that wasn't since the early Montevina platforms).

However, onsite coverage may not be available in all countries and all locations.
Thinkpad 25 (20K7), T490 (20N3), Yoga 14 (20FY), T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X220 4291-4BG
X61 7673-V2V, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G, X32 (IPS Screen), A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad

This is the information I got from lenovo support:

onsite warranty is only national.

depot warranty is international.

My X61 tablet was bought at the Lenovo Outlet and luckily had a three-year on-site warranty that was valid in both the USA and Switzerland. Thank goodness because I have needed it many times!

My X200, also bought at the Lenovo Outlet, only had a one-year international warranty but it was NOT valid in Switzerland, so I had to replace the HDD via a friend in Canada.

You can determine what countries your warranty is valid in by checking on the Lenovo warranty site. Essentially, if they sold it in that country then they support it there.

"International" does not mean "worldwide". Even if the warranty would be only valid in USA and Canada, it would still count as "international" :)

That's not always true.
E.g. they used to sell X200 in Russia (under the machine type 7448); however, the international warranty does not work in Russia for USA-purchased X200 (machine type 7454-2GU), as you can see on lenovo IWS countries list.
From the other hand, they sell X220 in USA under the machine type 4286 and in Russia under the machine type 4290; both 4286 and 4290 have Russia in their IWS countries list. And, IIRC, there was some model not sold in Russia at all yet serviced under the IWS....
Basically, one should check an appropriate machine type on lenovo website prior to ordering the laptop.

Absolutely. One must check the machine type (ex. 4239), not just the model name (ex. T520).

I checked the warranty for the machine type of my planned T520 purchase a couple of weeks ago but thanks to penartur's reminder, I just double checked that the model type of my current quote (4239) still shows warranty in the countries that I require it. :)

Sorry, I meant that nowadays all model types I looked at have proper (worldwide) international warranties. This didn't use to be the case.

I already gave an example of post-Montevina thinkpad (namely, X220 "7454-2GU") which has warranty coverage far from worldwide (excluding e.g. all the EU) :)
Even for the current models the coverage is far from worldwide, and the same model sold in different countries could have quite different coverage; e.g. for US-sold X220 (4286) list of countries beginning with "A" is:
ALBANIA
ALGERIA
ARGENTINA
ARMENIA
AUSTRALIA
AUSTRIA
AZERBAIJAN
and for Russia-sold X220 (4290) the list is:
ANTIGUA
ARGENTINA
ARUBA
AUSTRALIA
Out of 13 (according to Wikipedia) countries beginning with "A", 4286 is serviced in 7, while 4290 is serviced only in 4; Abkhazia, Afghanistan, Andorra, Angola are missing from both lists; only Argentina and Australia are presented in both lists simultaneously; X220 purchased in Russia won't be serviced e.g. in Armenia (which is BTW obviously connected to Russia more closely compared to USA) and a civilized Austria, while X220 purchased in USA won't be serviced in small yet proud Netherlands-constituent Aruba (which is BTW located close to the USA).
The logic of Lenovo making such differentiation is beyond the grasp of the mind
Lifebook P1032 (1024*600 8.9") => Averatec AV1000 (WXGA 10.6") => Kohjinsha SH6 (1024*600 7.2") => Sharp M4000 (WXGA 13.3") => X200-AFFS, dead => X200s-AFFS, later -PVA => X220 4290RV5 + Intel 310 80GB, T420s 4173KSU + FHD IPS + Sandisk Z400s 128GB

Strange. In my lookup, 4290 brings the same list as 4286 (including most/all of the EU). As do all current model numbers from Tabook and Slbook. :?

I too get exactly the same list for the 4290 & 4286 (and my 4239) but much shorter lists for some others, like 7454 and.
