Who uses a new sandy bridge thinkpad and disabled the fan by tpfancontrol? How much is the cpu temperature then?

My T60 with 1.8 GHZ core duo and intel gma 950 has a temperature of up to 80 celsius, rarely up to 85 celsius. From 85 celsius the fan starts. It runs stable for years. Is the sam possible with newer thinkpads or do they run even cooler?

Wow,,, isn't the max on that CPU 100 °C? I wouldn't want to try running one of my machines that close to max for any length of time, max minus 30 is what I personally shoot for

(100°C = 212 °F = boiling point of water at standard pressure)

For others who might not be as lucky or plan to keep their machine a very long time:
The hotter a processor is, the more Electron Transmigration occurs. That degrades semi-conductors. Better cooling lessens this degradation. Cooler components should result in longer product life. Not every processor is the same and may not cope with heat stress the same way. Intel's 0 to 100 °C is what they will warranty for.

Anyhoo, for the original question it would really matter WHICH exact CPU is in the machine...

T420 & X220:
Core i3-2310M = 35W
Core i5-2410M = 35W
Core i5-2520M = 35W
Core i5-2540M = 35W
Core i7-2620M = 35W

T520 (plus the above cpu's):
Core i7-2720QM = 45W
Core i7-2820QM = 45W

then the W and L series + ???

Which core duo is in your machine? (There are several diff 1.8GHz) Looks like Merom 17W or 35W, or Yonah at 31W.

For anyone answering this thread, please include what CPU & ambient temperature(room temp), would be interesting to see from a "how well it's designed" point of view.

It is 31 Watt and it's generally below 85 celsius with a room temperature of around 20 celsius - and docked! I really wonder if newer cpus will be hotter than my old one without active cooling.

Looks like most of the new ones (Thinkpads) are 35W or 45W... I'm putting my money on newer ones not being cooler.

Looks like the Dell Alienware M11x R3 Gaming Notebook comes with that nice shiney Core i7-2657M @ 17W as an option

I'm curious: how do you get a T2400 to 80-85C without playing a serious game or having about 275 FireFox windows open with half of them running audio/video applications?

my t61 has a c2d T7100, TDP of 35W, when it is idling it stays at under 40 degrees, when I stress it with bios fan settings it maxes out at 70 degrees (at which point it takes about 6 hours to charge the battery with a 65 watt adapter). In normal use (I.E. no games/compiling code/video work) the fan stays off, and the processor stays under 50 degrees.

(All degrees are in Celcius)

If I put a more modern cpu in a T60 or T61, will it be much hotter than my T2400 (1,8 GHZ) without cooling? Is it possible to downclock a 2,6 GHZ CPU to 1,8 GHZ? I was thinking of replacing my T60 motherboard with a T61 one and put a T9500 inside:

Have you ever considered cleaning the cooling system and fan from dust? If you never did that during the time you own the machine, you will easily decrease the temperature level of your system by doing so. Just make sure to block the fan from spinning when blowing out the dust, in order to not produce any currency which would only fry and kill your mainboard. The T9500 (or T9300, T8100, T8300) is a Penryn CPU which runs less hot due to consuming less power than the former Merom CPU generation. So, swapping the T60 board with penryn-capable T61 board including said processor is a very good idea. BTW, i am currrently collecting the required parts for doing the very same, but any kind of Penryn CPU will do for me. Would rather invest the money in a SSD drive than spend a premium for the fastest Penryn, as the CPU is not really the speed limiting factor during standard daily use anyway.

Is a 2,6 GHZ Penryn CPU cooler than my current 1,8 GHZ Menron CPU? My fan runs less than a minute a day, the rest of the time the system is at around 80 celsius and I do not cool it at all. Therefore my fan looks like new and there is no dust at all
