Little help with motherboard markings

#1 Post by PuuFa » Sat Jun 18, 2011 5:25 am

Hi! Could someone tell me where the R662 in the picture refers? I should solder a wire in R662 but I don't quite understand the markings. Thanks in advance! :)

I think it would help tremendously, if you gave us type and model of the laptop in question, as well as (possibly) the motherboard P/N.

It is X41 tablet 1867-9GU. I don't think I will see the part number without tearing it apart more but if it's necessary I can do it, though I think all these boards have pretty much the same layout.

No need to rip apart the machine just for finding out such minor details.

Just go to www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=SITE-WARNTY&sitestyle=lenovo and enter the Type and Serial Number of your machine. Once the warranty details are displayed after you submitted this information, just click again on the link at the bottom saying "View parts lookup results for this system". Once done, a listing of all original components contained in the machine is displayed. Search for the word "planar" in the list and note down the Part number and FRU shown on the left side. There might be a double entry for planar, so just report back them both.

That is (was?) part of the beauty of the Thinkpad experience.

Alright, this was quite an interesting link. Wonder why I haven't found it out before... So the planar part number is 41W1071 and FRU 41W1072. Hope this helps. I'm really not too experienced yet on these things but learning fast.

In the matter of fact if someone is interested in what I'm actually about to do I can say it's something VERY interesting (at least for me). In China they have found out that connecting C676 and R662 on the X41 planar will actually overclock it to work in 533MHz FSB. Which means for 1.5GHz version to overclock up to 2GHz and 1.6 up to about 2.13GHz. Although as far as I know (I don't understand Chinese) they have only done it with the 1.5GHz version and apparently it works great but I would try it with a 1.6...not expecting too much yet but hey would it not be awesome if it works? :D Probably would need some improved cooling though but that's not a big problem for me, I have been planning on such improvement in any case as the bottom gets really hot even in stock speeds.

Maybe this should be in the X2/X3/X4x series forum but in the first place I was just trying to find out where to solder the "R662" end of the wire.

Motherboard markings can be confusing, especially when there's hardly any room to print component IDs next to parts that are smaller than a grain of rice. In your photo, capacitor C676 is easily identified as the mark is printed just to the right of the part. In cases where there is no room, the manufacturer will either not print anything, or give you a "map" that indicates the relative positions of the components. If you don't mind, I've taken your photo and highlighted what I mean:

For resistors R710(?), R708, R709 and R711, they are mounted on the board just above where the four IDs are printed. For resistor R662, it's probably located nearby and is surrounded by the same number of parts as what is printed in the box on the board.

What's critical besides finding the right resistor, is how the wire jumper is connected. From the looks of it, one side of C676 is connected to system ground. I'm assuming that the other end of C676 is what is supposed to go to R662. Regardless, there's two ends of a resistor and you will need to attach the jumper to the correct side. If you pick the wrong end, you may do some permanent damage to the motherboard.

Hum...this seems to be getting complicated. I understood those IDs that were printed close to the parts but the R662 is still a mystery to me. It was supposed to be under the memory/wifi door like the C676 but I just can't figure out where it is. Well I guess I will take a look again tomorrow. Then again choosing the right end of the resistor might really be another problem I didn't think before... I was using Google to translate the Chinese instructions and I'm quite positive there was nothing mentioned about which end should it be. Just told to connect these two with a wire jumper. Seems like this needs a little more research before I can try it out but I'm sure it will be worth of it (if it will work).

I've opened up my own X41T and I don't see any place that's accessible under the memory/MiniPCI panel which could be related to resistor R662. It might be located in another area on the bottom side of the motherboard or it may even be on the top side. Almost all of the areas which has a group of component IDs enclosed in a box drawn around them are tagged by a letter. In the case of R662 and its neighbors, that's a "C". The other area seen in your photo is "F". Somehow that relates to specific areas on the motherboard but I'm at a loss to describe exactly where they are.

Thank you for your effort! Someone who has access to the Chinese forum posted a picture and a better translation here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 88#p636988 Ouch...I didn't even think it would be this simple! Anyways I tried it with my 1.6GHz but it was not stable at all. :( It should be working with a 1.5GHz version no doubt. I actually feel a little tempted to get such planar but well..have to think about it.
