Welcome to the forum!

Could you please be more specific in describing what exactly you're having problem with when it comes to the keyboard?

Greetings! I'm with George, we need to know what you don't understand. Since your keyboard is the main way to enter information into your computer, you do need to understand how to use it. But, since you have written this post on a computer, it's obvious that you understand how to use a keyboard. In the mean time, below is a link to a basic how to that should help.

Using Your Keyboard
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

You most likely have a German keyboard, like this?

You'd need to hold the right hand Alt-Gr key down, then the Q/@ key to get the @.

tried the alt-gr key, but it did nothing. guess i'll just have to switch out the keyboard

Load the German Language keyboard driver.
This layout should do it: http://www.forlang.wsu.edu/help/kgerman.asp
Alternatively, get a US-English keyboard.
Only 3 (15" screen) or 4 (14.1") screws.
Check this HMM for the how-to: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-46464
