Hi, Dave!

Welcome to the club!
I joined the forum w/ the same concern; I wanted to update my 100 GB Hitachi to 160 GB Hitachi, but everyone here tells me that it is impossible, since IBM does not have any firmware for HDDs that large.

So, bro, if you discover that it is possible, let me know; I would be trilled to update my T43p w/ a 160 GB one.

Dave, instead of spending time writing on this forum, I would suggest to write e-mails or letters to Lenovo to release a 160 GB PATA HDD for T43p or at least a firmware update for it. That will solve the problem and if all the guys from this forum do the same, there is a good chance they will do it.

Wish you all the best!

Can't be done with HGST 120 GB, or any other drive bigger than 100 GB. See my posting 11 messages above.

Hi there...

I have a t43 (2686-E7U) with bios 1.29 and embedded controller 1.06. When I installed the seagate ST9120821A, the BIOS does not pick it up, therefore I cannot install an operating system.

Not sure how some folks with similar configuration can get this to work, but others cannot. I don't care if I get the 2010 error, I just want to be able to install the seagate ST9120821A.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
albo wrote:Just to let people know, I put a seagate ST9120821A 130 Gb drive in my T43 2668-73u XP machine, and it worked like a charm. Didn't have to do anything. I have bios 1.29.

Does anyone know of any 200Gb+ drives that will pop into a t43 without troubles? I need to step up a size...

thanks,
allie

T43, Win XP SP2, BIOS 1.29, embedded controller 1.05.

Seagate ST980815A 80GB 5400 drive recovered from restore disks with no problems despite error 2010 during boot.

I've been using it for several days with no issues yet.

New Hitachi drive for my system

#457 Post by rpmorrison » Sat Feb 16, 2008 4:14 pm

I purchased an approved drive for my T43p. It is the Hitachi 100GB HTS721010G9AT00 which is listed on Lenovo's site as an approved drive. When I went to upgrade the firmware in it it said that it did not need an update. The update that Lenovo has here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62282 and here ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... hd50en.txt is MCZ0A5CA and what came on the drive is MCZ0A51A. So as a result of this it will not update the firmware to the A5CA version.

If anyone has some thoughts on this please let me know. Does this mean that I do not have to update the drive? My guess is a no to my question and probably it will only work if it has that firmware on it. Any thoughts would be helpful. Right now I am a little dissapointed.

Thanks

The firmware upgrade program checks the drive software version number, as well as the model number. HTS7210109AT00 is the model number. The software version number includes the OEM the drive was made for. “I” is for IBM, “D” is for Dell, and “O” is a generic OEM that probably did not have any modifications to the stock SW. The software upgrade utility program will only upgrade a drive that it determines has IBM SW in it. Specifically, it is looking for version: “IA51A”. Most of the recent HTS7210109AT00 models on the market have version “OA53A” in them. IF this is the case, and you follow the instructions here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... &start=360

You will have success. If your drive is a Dell model, too bad. I bought one of these and tried for yours to rework the burning SW, but was unable to get it to upgrade it.
Good luck.

new hitachi drive follow up

#459 Post by rpmorrison » Mon Feb 18, 2008 7:02 am

I went through and found on page 10 of this list Messer’s and Blapp’s post particular to this drive and how to update the firmware. Messer’s was very good and Blapp’s was detailed regarding the Hitachi 100GB HTS21010G9AT00 drive which I purchased. Here is his post once again:

I have uploaded the bootable CD image to rapid share.

http://rapidshare.com/files/8425286/5k7k100.iso.html

This was made using debian and the following commands -

unrar e 5K7K100_Revised.rar
sudo mount -o loop,ro 5K7K100.img /mnt/test
mkdir /tmp/5k7k100
cp -Rp /mnt/test/* /tmp/5k7k100
cp -p 5K7K100.img /tmp/5k7k100
mkisofs -pad -b 5K7K100.img -R -o /tmp/5k7k100.iso /tmp/5k7k100

and then burnt to CD using -

cdrecord dev=1,0,0 speed=12 -pad -v -eject /tmp/5k7k100.iso

I was able to boot this CD and upgrade a Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00 (MCZOA51A) 7200rpm 100GB drive on a T43p and stop the 2010 error using the following procedure:

Boot from CD
Press F5 when it displays "Starting PC-DOS"
At the prompt (A:\) type:

hfui15.exe OA51A MCZIA51A.bdr /F mpcA51Ab.tbl

Press return
Press u when given the option on new screen
Press any button when after a while red error message is diplayed
When returned to the prompt type:

hfui15.exe IA51A MCZIA51A.bdr /F mpcA51Ab.tbl

Press return
Press u when given the option on new screen
Press any key when big PASS message displayed.
Alt-Ctrl-Del

I have downloaded the iso file from Lenovo’s site and burned the CD. This is the information out of the FW.PRO file particular to this drive type from Hitachi:

HGST : HTS7210**G9AT00

There is 60 GB and 80 GB data which is here as well.
;
HTS721010G9AT00 100.0GB
"HTS721010G9AT00","MCZIA41M","MCZIA5CA","MCZIA5CA.bdr","hfui15.exe","IA5CA","/u mpcA5CAb.tbl"
"HTS721010G9AT00","MCZIA51A","MCZIA5CA","MCZIA5CA.bin","hfui15.exe","IA5CA","/u mpcA5CAb.tbl"

The difference is that Lenovo has a new firmware version for this drive. It is MCZIA5CA where as both Messer’s and Blapp’s posts are regarding MCZIA51A. My OEM drive is MCZOA51A which is the same that Messer and Blapp reference. You who are reading, do you think that I should use Blapp’s CD which I have downloaded and update the drive to the MCZIA51A firmware and then let the Lenovo CD update the drive to the MCZIA5CA or do you think that I can go right straight to the Lenovo firmware update? My concern is that it was really using the same version of firmware except that it was Lenovo’s with the “I” instead of the “O” for the A51A version of the firmware. This will be A5CA and will the “O” be changed to the “I” without a problem. Maybe I am concerned about nothing but I just did not want to mess my new drive up and brick it as you can a router. In this case I would be throwing away $110.

Thanks for you patience and help.

Hmmm I've just ordered a new 120Gb 5400rpm drive (Samsung HM121HC) for my T43 1871, as the 40Gb drive that came with it is now dead.

Don't want to have to worry about errors though!

Is the Seagate Momentus 5400.2 ST9120821A the only 120Gb drive that will work without having to fiddle with firmware?

Has anyone tried a 5400.3?

Well after doing some more reading and checking out the latest update on Lenovo's I started to look for drives from their list of ones compatible with their update:

  Seagate ST980825A
  Seagate ST910021A
Note: Seagate firmware update program will take about 2 minutes
         to complete.
After searching for one of the 80/100Gb drives I have become dismayed by the cost of buying (let alone trying to source one in stock) one of these older drives.

The Samsung 120Gb I ordered (now cancelled) was only £37!

Turns out the company where I have ordered the Samsung drive from have one of the drives from Lenovo's list, so I've decided to just go for it. It's the Hitachi IC25N040ATMR04-0.

It's a 4200RPM 40Gb drive, hopefully it shouldn't be too much of a pain to install. It cost £25. I have a lot of file server space so I don't really need a large drive on my laptop, its just the cost to drive space trade off that pisses me off.

Just a follow up with my endeavors to install a new 100 GB 7200 RPM Hitachi drive. I was able to update the firmware and now have it in my T43p running. It seems to be faster than the original 80 GB 5400 RPM drive. I am slowly rebuilding it. I have put the old drive into a Apricorn housing and am accessing it through the USB port and it is working great.

Thanks everyone for your help on this.

250GB PATA WORKS on T43p

#463 Post by jflores » Fri May 16, 2008 4:09 am

Hi All,

Just a notice to let you know I have successfully installed a 250GB PATA drive (WD 2500BEVE) on T43p. 5400rpm, but pretty speedy (latest PMR tech), and silent. maybe a bit hot, but not much more than the rest of the laptop - pretty tight space on that model I guess.

Okay...did'nt know that there was 250 GB 2,5" disks.

Is 5400 speed okay or is 7200 much better?
I'm danish. Sorry for my sometimes bad english spelling and understanding.

If you read up online about how diskspeed matters, you'll get a little bit of a better idea. Of course, 7200 is better than 5400, but with the 250 GB models, I'm not sure that you have much of a choice these days. For personal computing, I've found the 5400 to be just fine. I think it might swallow less battery as well.

Keep in mind with this WD 250 GB drive that you'll end up with the 2010 error. I really couldn't care less myself - it seems to park itself properly with the Shock Protector. I'm not sure what other ATA commands it might not be implementing properly, but it seems to operate fine to me.

I love having all this space on my laptop. I recommend it. Sell your old drive on ebay, once you wipe it clean, to make the upgrade effectively cheaper. I think I used partition magic to do that, if i remember correctly, but there are plenty of programs out there that will do that for you.

I have the same WD 250 GB drive, and yes, it gives the 2010 error, but I've gotten used to it (and I never shut down my computer anymore anyway -- I just put it to sleep).

Hello,
I have a "Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00" with a A53A firmware. It is from dell, internally it shows MZOA53A as the firmware.

Trying to upgrade it to the IBM version IA5CA, but it always thinks the model name as just "Hitachi," and none of the HFUI15 commands worked , they worked on earlier drives which have the model name as just HTS721010G9AT00 and no Hitachi in front of them.

Does anyone have ideas or how to correct the model name ?
The /S switch doesnot work for the command line HFUI15.exe

I had one of these Dell versions of the HGST 100 GB 7200 RPM drive as well, with the same model number. I was NEVER able to run the first step to convert it over to a IBM model number, despite many tires.

I tried several of the switches available for the DOS command (type it with just a /? to bring up help and see what is available), but still no luck.

Ended up putting it in a T40, that does not care about the missing SATA commands.

I am tempted to try the 120GB version of this Fujitsu drive - the MHV2120AH - and I was wondering if that drive would be 2010-free as well? Has anyone had one of those in the T43? More specifically, does it run 2010-free on the latest BIOS 1.29?

Greeting all

I need help again! What am I doing wrong???

I am working on a T43P 2668 G7G with the dreaded 2010 error; the HDD fitted is a 40GB Hitachi Travel star IC25N040ATCS05-0 which features in the 07-03-2008 list of allowable drives, just a case of updating the firmware??

So I pull down the latest file fwhd51.iso and using record it now burn a CDR, I gather from the instructions just burning it makes it bootable. I did click the make CD bootable button but file fwhd51.iso was not available in the browse system so I returned to a simply burn as per the instructions.
I then reset the boot list with optical drive to #1.

I restarted the machine, it booted as normal but with the DVD drive whizzing away, it has been set up to pause and pass through 2010 error. Failure I thought, tried again, same results. Started again pulled down file, burnt new disc, checked boot order and moved HDD back to #5 after optical drive (1) and usb + floppy drives and tried again.
No luck same results as above, thus the request for help as I have read and reread the instructions and I seem to be missing something??

Any advice will be gratefully received as usual

Hello users of the Thinkpads! I`m the novice here..

I look on the supported of models and I chosen the Hitachi HTS541612J9AT00 (120GB!). Today, I put the HDD in notebook, but I couldnt updated firmware. Look at the screen of updating firmware please. I think its problem in my FW (SBD0)A70H, because supported is A79H. How could updated firmaware? I look in to the fw.pro file and I find only this:

//////
; HGST : HTS5416**J9AT00

So, whats next?

thx for any advice.

Hitachi HTS541616J9AT00 works without 2010

#473 Post by dan0815 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 1:16 pm

Hello,

I've just updated a HTS541616J9AT00 (160G) with SB4OA70H firmware to IA79H. I used the actual release from the Lenovo page and the information in this forum. Following steps I made:

- Burn Image
- Restart, and exit update tool via ctrl c
- Typed : 1) COPY SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR
2) HFUI1704 -pm OA79H SB2IA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> error
3) HFUI1704 -pm IA79H SB2OA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> PASS
- reboot -> no 2010

After that I restored the system via RR. The Disksize was only 130 G, I don't know why. When I've found out why the size is reduced, I'll tell you. The active disk protection works, at lest in a way I was able to test it (startet copy task and then lifted the T43 up a little bit while looking at the real time animation; when it showed the pause sign there was in the same moment no more noise from the HD). Pretty poor test, I know, but better than nothing.

Good experience with Fujitsu 120gb in T43p

#474 Post by mattster » Tue Jun 24, 2008 10:00 am

I ordered a Fujitsu 120GB drive for my T43p last week, which arrived yesterday. I installed it into the system and did not have the dreaded 2010 error. No flashing of firmware was needed.

I got the recovery cd's loaded last night and will do all the updates this evening and report back on APS, which should be fine according to posts I've read elsewhere involving this drive.

Also, it could be my imagination, but this drive is 5400rpm. I upgraded for an 80gb 7200 RPM Hitachi that the system came with. This new drive so far seems just as fast as that drive...I'll report more on this as well over the next couple of weeks.

FYI:

$60 + shipping (was $8 to North Carolina)
Current Systems: T470p, T440p & X240

Previous System: T400 (2764-CTO) - needs troubleshooting / work

On the 14th June I wrote about my failure to update firmware, well as no advice was offered I read and reread the instructions and thought 3rd time lucky ??

Well, I do not know what I did differently but this time it worked, I have a HDD that has the latest firmware and no 2010 error.

Do I put it down to a senior moment ? or a bad batch of cheap CD-R's ? I dont know! I am just happy that I got the right result.
Perseverance has paid off and I think I have learnt something!

Hello,

Same Drive, same firmware version, applied your procedure on my T43 and it works ! Thanks !

Just to be exact, the right commands are :

1) COPY SB2IA79H.BDR SB2OA79H.BDR
2) HFUI1704 OA79H -pm SB2IA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL
-> Typed U in the tool -> error
3) HFUI1704 IA79H -pm SB2OA79H.BDR /F SRBA79HB.TBL

I am wondering nobody is annoyed about the behaviour of IBM/Lenovo, instead, all of you is accepting this and looking for a poor workaround.

It should be possible to disassemble the latest BIOS (1.29?) from a T43 and to patch the routine within the code which is responsible for the annoying message (just skipping the message would be the only thing to do, means a few NOP's instead of a CALL command).
Does anybody tried this ?

I have no glue why my HTS541010G9AT00 / MBZOA60A (100GB Hitachi) drive is not working without an error message because it's listed as a compatible drive, and I couldn't find a straight forward solution in any entry here yet ;-(

GLR did your hard drive also decrease from 160GB to 130GB. Is the original 160GB firmware available anywhere, or an utility to save the firmware from the hard drive.

It worked for me also, but it made the drive a HTS541680*** instead of a HTS541616*** and the drive feature tool, shows manufacturing size of only 137.44 GB, around 23GB was lost.

Does anyone know How to fix the LBA's in firmware? or the table etc.

I installed the Fujitsu MHV2120AH 120gb drive in my T43 2 weeks ago, loaded from recovery CDs, and its working great - no issues at all. The drive it replaced was a 7200rpm 60gb hitachi, but quite honestly I'm not seeing any performance hits with this as a 5400rpm drive. Although to be fair there were "issues" with the OS that was loaded on the original hd.

If I had the choice for a larger drive, sure I would have gone for it. But having no 2010 issues, and not having to deal with flashing the hd - certainly made this a breeze.

Hello thinkpad community,

(concerning GLR, rssb, dan0815 post in this topic)

I just updated my hardrive Hitachi HTS541616J9AT00 (160GB) with SB4OA70H firmware to IA79 as well to use it in my T43p.

But as dan0815 and rssb harddrive as well, my harddrive no more has the 2010 error but decreases from 160 GB to 130 GB, because the harddrive is now using the firmware HTS541680.

When you look in the FW.PRO data file of the fwhd51.iso file, you can see, that the HTS5416**J9AT00 harddrives are supported, but normally only until the capacity of 80 GB (HTS541680J9AT00 80.0GB).

Thats why the harddrive HTS541616J9AT00 now uses the firmware HTS5416**J9AT00 and have a capacity decrease from 160 GB to 130 GB.

So I think, we all have to make an report to lenove (only together we are strong),
so that they update the firmware, that the harddrive HTS541616J9AT00 will be suported as well.
