I bought a 120 gig drive from samsung (HM120JC) and only found out about error 2010 when I booted it up for the first time.

So far it looks like it's working fine. It's set to udma5 and it gets 40MB/sec transfer, so I don't think there's any problem there. I haven't seen any errors in /var/log/messages or experienced any trouble at all since I started using it.

I'm certainly going to back up every night, and it's a pain to have to hit ESC when booting (I have linux, so I can't upgrade the thinkpad bios), but I think this drive is compatible.

100GB 7k100 Hitachi Problems

#273 Post by aograin » Thu Apr 20, 2006 12:38 am

Ok, long time reader, first time poster… anyways I just purchased a 100GB 7k100 Hitachi and am having trouble updating the firmware. Here’s what I’ve done so far…

I’ve downloaded and booted from a USB flash drive the files provided by Messar. Yet I can’t get them to work correctly.

The firmware that came with the drive is (MCZOA51A) I need (MCZIA51A).

I’ve tried the:

HFUI15.EXE OA51A MCZIA51.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL (and then)

HFUI15.EXE IA51A MCZIA51.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL

But I get these errors:

(Execution Status Window)
Checking Drive 0 (Device 0 on Primary Bus)
Soft reset failed. Error code=ff80

Am I missing something? Should I copy my operating system onto the drive first?
Maybe someone has bootable cd.iso that worked for them they could post. As always, thanks for any help.

Ok, I figured it out. when I created the USB boot drive using HP's utility, I just copied the files over directly onto it. What I needed to do was to create a folder and then put the files into that folder. But that fixed the problem.

What am I doing wrong?

#275 Post by mikeyu » Sun Apr 23, 2006 1:16 am

After reading all the posts here, I bought a 5400 120 Gig Seagate, deciding trying to take a chance on its compatibility.

Well, I ghost'ed my drive and plugged into the primary HD slot. And of course I get the infamous 2010 message, which I thought I could live with. Here is the probably I hit ESC and I get a blank screen and get nothing, but a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner and that is it.

I boot up with my original HD and everything works. I plug in the new HD in a usb case and I can read its contents in Windows. A little confused, I try booting up with the new HD in the USB enclosure, without the original HD and my computer boots.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get my new HD to work in the HD bay. At this point, I don't care if I get the 2010 error, as long as I can boot for the new HD.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe you can try Master boot record repair kit.

You missed a setting in GHOST when you were backing up. Under options...Image/Tape, you have to select FullBoot. If you don't select this, GHOST only backs up a few blocks from the boot track. The IBM OEM image has extra data stored in the boot track for the pre-desktop/system restore utility. You have to back up the entire boot track or it will not boot correctly on restore.

success with Seagate 100 GB drive

Successfully installed Seagate Momentus 7200.1 ST910021A 100GB from ZipZoomFly in my T43.

No 2010 warnings, no errors, no firmware or BIOS updates needed. Worked out of the box. :D

Fail (2010 error) with Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB

#280 Post by ruymbeke » Fri May 12, 2006 11:10 pm

Hello,
FYI, I have the T43 2010 bios error with the retail version of the
Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB, model #: ST9160821A,
PN: 981034-500, vertical recording high end Seagate drive.
So for now I am forced to keep my 120GB Seagate drive
and will return this 160GB Seagate drive to Fry's asap.
I am surprised and disapointed that Seagate did not carry the IBM fix
they have done for the 120GB over following families of drives
like this 160GB. Best Regards,
Gilles

Fail (2010 error) with Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB Drive

Based on 2 posts before this I picked up one of these after failing with a 80GB Hitachi and an 80GB Fujitsu.

Still no go. Have yet to find a bigger drive that will work in this stupid thing.

Just inserted a Hitachi 7K100 into my other IBM Thinkpad T42 - one of the lenovo manufactured ones with the following:

BIOS version: 3.20 (1RETDOWW)
BIOS date : 2006-02-27
Embedded controller version: 3.04
Machine type-Model: 23734WU

I was able to use it with no issues or 2010 error. Works like a champ.

YaY!.

What fix for the 120GB? I'd like to know where that can be found...
You get better results with a kind word and a two-by-four than with a kind word alone.

I am amazed this is still an issue. It's not like I'm trying to use some strange device. I have a Hitachi 5k100 (MBZO revision firmware), there's no real good reason to give a 2010 error.

I really don't see why the BIOS hasn't been updated to let us disable the error completely at this point.

120/160Gb options

#287 Post by mork » Tue Jul 04, 2006 2:18 pm

Hi,
Can someone give me an update on this topic.
I am considering buying a new HDD for my T43, are there any 120gb drives that are either compatible out of the box or 100% fixable (the easier the better)?
Is it true the 160 Gb Seagate ST9160821A Momentus will not work at all?

Thanks for your help

Look through this thread some and you will find that people have reported certain drives as not triggering the 2010. You will also find a guide to flashing certain Hitachi based HDDs to avoid the 2010 Error.

I was just about to post that same link :D

I haven't tried it, I don't have one of those drives (I've got this 5400 RPM Hitachi with an odd revision number that almost nobody else has ever seen before).

Sigh... almost considering just getting another drive, and putting this 100GB in my mac mini.

Just a shame to drop another $150-175 on a drive, when they shouldn't give an error.

The error doesn't annoy me at home, but does when I boot other places, and don't want an unexpected loud beep.

There is no hard disk to update?

#291 Post by ebitansky » Fri Jul 07, 2006 5:43 pm

Hello,
I have bought from newegg.com the oem version of 72k100 Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00
Of course I got the Error:2010 so I followed up on the instructions HFUI15.EXE OA51A MCZIA51A.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL
HFUI15.EXE IA51A MCZIA51A.BDR /F MPCA51AB.TBL

the upper left corner where HDD information is always empty.
and when running both of the commands gets me these errors:

(Execution Status Window)
Checking Drive 0 (Device 0 on "jkhjkhjksdhfksdf" (Gibrish) Bus)
Soft reset failed. Error code=0100
This device is unknown

at the message below it says: "There is no hard disk to update. (Hit any key)
and after doing that there is another message:
"Finish without downloading !!"
What am I doing wrong?

when I am running FM.exe I can see that the firmware version is MCZOA51A.

ST910021A Still Gives 2010 Error!!

#292 Post by JWadle » Sun Jul 09, 2006 6:18 pm

Contrary to several other reports on this forum, I have found that the Seagate ST910021A 100GB 7200rpm hard drive results in the 2010 error on my Thinkpad T43p.

I also tried upgrading the firmware with the fwhd32.iso download from Lenovo, but despite the description of this update saying that it included the ST910021A for an upgrade to v3.07, the utility found my drive with v3.04 and told me no upgrade was required (i.e. it would not do the upgrade).

Has anyone else had problems with the ST910021A or been able to uprgade its firmware?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had exactly the same problem... After reading all the posts on this thread, I also bought a Seagate ST910021A 100GB 7200rpm for my T43, but contrary to the reports I also got the 2010 error. I tried using the lenovo firmware update iso, but it won't let me upgrade. The drive's current firmware version is 3.04. My drive supposedly came from Fry's (i bought it from someone else on craigslist). For those of you who got a working out-of-box Seagate ST910021A, could you indicate where you bought the drives? Maybe that'll help...

Also, for those of you who got a working seagate, could you post what your Firmware version is? I believe this info should be on the HD itself. The last barcode that says, "FW: 3.04," for example, should be the firmware version.
Thanks a lot!

Do you think it is possible to use messar's instructions for Hitachi drives for a Seagate? The file info for Seagate in ibm/lenovo's FW.PRO is :
; ST910021A 100.0GB
"ST910021A","3.06","3.07","m72307.bin","HFus429.exe","","-m m72 -b -v"

But this doesn't seem to adhere to Messar's description of what each of these terms mean... Messar's instructions look to be for Hitachi drives only, which looks like this in FW.PRO:

"HTS548060M9AT00","MGBOA5DA","MGBOA5HA","MGBIA5HA.bin","hfui12L.exe","IA5HA","/u MRLA5HA.tbl"

So for Seagate, it doesn't seem like it has a "Version control phrase," which for the Hitachi it is defined as "IA5HA." Also, Seagate's "CHECKSUM file" doesn't look like a file at all, where as for Hitachi it is defined as "MRLA5HA.tbl."

Could anyone provide some input on this matter? How could I transfer Messar's guide for Hitachi drives to Seagate drives?

Thank you very much!

Hi

I just bought and installed an OEM ST910021A into my T43p 2668 F8G.

I get the BIOS warning.

I downloaded the IBM HD firmware update that lists the Seagate: Version: FWHD43 Release Date: 2006/06/19

It showed 3.04 installed and 3.07 available but didnt want to update.

I ran the update manually (scary!) - which it now shows as installed, but I still get the BIOS warning (which you can set in the BIOS to only show for 2 seconds and then continue).

I suspect that there is possibly a later BIOS/EC update due from IBM/Lenovo that needs to work in tandem with the Seagate update (if only to clear the warning message!).
EDIT: I am on BIOS 24 May 2006 1YET62WW (1.27) and EC 06 Jun 2006 1YHT29WW (1.06).

Other than that the drive is installed with XP and seems fine.

Getting Error 2010 with Seagate 120GB on T43

#298 Post by ozalby » Sat Aug 26, 2006 5:35 pm

I just upgraded the Hard Disk on my T43 (2668-46H) running BIOS 1.28 Hard Disk to Seagate 120GB (ST9120821A FW 3.04), and getting the infamous Error 2010 message during bootup.

From reading the post here, this Seagate HD should apparently work straight from the box.

I was wondering if others have seen the same problem and know of a fix, apart from setting the BIOS not to pause on this error message?

Thanks.

Before formulating a rant, I want to be sure I understand the issues.

IBM/Lenovo took the T42 that supported just PATA, and as a T43 upgrade used a new Intel chipset that supported SATA. Either IBM/Lenovo or Intel included a PATA <=> SATA bridge that connects only to the primary HD bay that will only accept a PATA connector. The bridge is problematic in translating SATA commands that can be correctly executed by PATA drives, so IBM/Lenovo wrote or had written firmware that it installed and tested on the drives they sell. They offer firmware updates for drives from other manufacturers, but not for all current drives and they guarantee data reliability only for IBM drives.

Why did IBM/Lenovo put itself and its customers through this torture to produce a machine that had planar capability for SATA, but without any physical way to connect a SATA drive to the machine? Is there some benefit that isn't obvious to me that I gain in having this SATA compatibility?

Incidently ThinkWiki has a nice concise summary of this issue much of which was probably culled from this thread at:

There are many computers using the same chipset... but for some reason IBM includes this limitation.
