Well, I'll be darned! It worked that time - I kept getting a file not found error.

Thanks, Johan.

Hi all, I've just been trying to reset the Serial No & Type on my Ibm R40 (2681-K9G) & came across a site with dozens of downloads, including several maint???.exe files!!!

http://www.os2site.com/sw/hardware/ibm/ ... index.html

As far as I can tell, it's a legal site 7 has a Shed Load of useful stuff for Old & New Laptops.

Please let me know if you find it of use.

Hi, i don’t have an external USB-floppy disk reader to run IBM Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance program on diskette. Can i use RAMdisk instead? Has anyone succeeded in running maintenance program from virtual disk?

Although I didn't needed this tool, I've made some tests. Indeed, as someone said before, making an image of the floppy and burning it to a CD doesn't work. It starts but says the EEPROM is write-protected so the type/model cannot be changed. It worked when I booted from an USB floppy drive. I've also tried to add it to UBCD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com) which internally uses a tool called memdisk to create a virtual disk drive in memory but that failed with the same results - EEPROM write-protected.

There is a tool on UBCD to install it onto an USB stick, maybe this would work? I don't have a stick right now to try it. If someone would want to, here's the customized UBCD:
http://uploaded.to/?id=7jwmfv

Download it, extract and use tools\ubcd2usb\ubcd2usb.bat script to copy it to an USB stick (there is a similar script to create a CD ISO but as I said, I've tried this already). More info on UBCD's website.

The image of the IBM maintenance diskette is in "custom" directory.

i have tried this HMD version 1.75 on 4 different laptops, t40, x31, t42 and x40, all getting same error when i press option 1, error:" EEPROM is write-protected, maybe power off and power on then press ESC when IBM logo Screen Appears", but this disk works on THinkcenteres( Lenovo Desktop) does anyone know why?

I'd be very interested in knowing if this would work. I don't know if I'd actually be able to find a USB FDD anywhere!

There are several on eBay. Just do a search for 05K9283. A very handy option if I may say so myself.

Is 1.75 the latest version of the Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Diskette?

I am not sure but version 1.75 has worked on any ThinkPad that I have tried it on.

I tried this, but was getting write errors to the various USB sticks I tried.
I first tried my own img of the floppy that I made on a copy of UBCD that I had around, and put that into the /custom dir, changing the .cfg file appropriately. Ran the ubcd2usb.bat utility, got through the formatting, but for some reason when the system tried to read from the USB drive, it wasn't able to find it again. The USB drive died in the process of booting, getting caught at loading the custom image.

Looking through ubcd2usb.bat, the last step that it needed to do was to delete the "ldlinux.sys" file that gets put in /, so booted into a separate file manager, which was able to find the USB drive, located the file in question, and deleted it. Tried booting off of the USB drive again, and came up against the same problem.

The same thing happened when I tried the custom UBCD411c image, which set up the files and images pretty much exactly like I did, but I wanted to see if I had made an error in creating the floppy image.

So the question of whether or not it works with being embedded in Ultimate Boot CD is still unresolved, since it seems like there is a technical issue in there that i'm not able to get past.

Bah. I need to go borrow my ex's USB floppy drive now. Thanks, Lenovo. :x

This discussion Hardware Maintenance Diskette points to a download for HW Maintainance Discette 1.77, which can also act as a USB drive.
I have not tried this myself, but the information seemed useful.
Looking after these: x220, T61, T42p
