Can't install Windows XP

#1 Post by Gonzaleitor » Thu Jan 25, 2024 1:24 pm

I tried to install Win XP in a T42, T42p and T43 with no success. I used an M2 inside an IDE adapter and common IDE HDDs but the setup fails in different stages in all the machines. I used Easy 2 Boot. Any ideas that might help?

T42 gets a black screen after first part reboot, T42p fails to write
DLLs and T43 gets a black screen and reboots after setup starts.
irql_not_less_or_equal, Memory fails and all that. It's weird, only with this OS I have this problems.

From the description it sounds like the thing in common here is Easy 2 Boot. Never tried it, but usb boot things for OS installs have given me issues before.
Any chance you could try a stock xp install cd, or even a burned image of same?
Edit: another option could also be you os image being corrupted?

May be that the E2B and T4x are not compatible. WinSetupfromUSB neither. I can't find My XP disc, but i'm going to burn an ISO and try.
I tried several images, so I don't think they are the problem.
I succeded with E2B and T61, but it seems that T4xs are not willing to cooperate.

Put the ISO with Rufus on a USB-stick and boot from that.

I had thought that XP wasn't able to be booted from a USB?
Whenever I tried installing XP black edition, it would always freak out with Rufus upon boot.
I gave up and just burned a darn DVD...multiple times because I seem to scratch each disc after the 2nd or 3rd install.

It's possible. I managed to make one to install XP on a netbook, but that was over a decade ago, and I don't remember how to do it.

Well... burning the image with the stock dvd drive in the bay wasn't of too much help as it doesn't recognizes the discs I burn. I attached an external DVD drive but has the same errors as before, I'm thinking that the drive being external is an issue. Tonight I'll start swapping DVD drives in the bay and try Rufus as RBS suggested.
Thanks for the help, guys! I Will update with the results.

Memory_management error using the dvd drive inside the ultrabay...The problem starts with copying "driver.cab".
It had nothing to do with the external drive. I'm going to take out the keyboard and start swapping ram modules to see if I get lucky.
I'll try Rufus later.

Found the problem: a faulty RAM stick. After I swapped the module under the keyboard it went Butter smooth. The setup method was via DVD drive and a burned cd.
Thanks for the help, guys!

You mean, you had only 2 RAM sticks, which you 'swapped' around in 3 T4x machines?
Or did all 3 machines have a faulty RAM stick?

I didn't try again with the 3, only with the T42p. I have múltiple ram sticks, but the one that goes below the keyboard was the faulty one that was causing all the errors with the T42p. I have yet to install the OS in the other two.
