Re: 1.8" SATA to 2.5" IDE converter?

Question:

Has anybody tried whether the 1.8" SATA to 2.5" IDE converter (= the one which we are mainly discussing in this thread) will work with a 1.8" SATA SSD in the main HDD bay in a T43/p?

Reason for asking is partly that in this post I am quoting an eBay'er ("micro-ems") who mention to have used "T43 with internal SATA to PATA bridge, adapter - 1,8" SSD Runcore 128GB" (partly succesfull?!), although experienced some freezing (but this was perhaps owing to an unfortunate pick of SSD in combination with the 1.8" SATA to 2.5" PATA adapter, as I have experienced myself in T42/p's?), and moreover, in this post another report mention a no-go in a T43... :? Today, I just stumbled across Michael J Moffitt's Project Log » Blog Archive » Intel 915GM SATA Hack where...:
... in his post of July 19th, 2012 at 2:47 AM, Simon wrote:I have a T42p running a 1.8″ SSD on a PATA to SATA adapter and was a bit disappointed when the same hardware wouldn’t work in my T43p
... but with no details about what had been done/tried etc.?

So: Anyone from this forum who can definitely (= from own, actual experience) confirm whether T43/p's will, or won't, work with the 1.8" SATA to 2.5" PATA adapter and a 1.8" SATA drive (SSD or HDD) in the main (HDD) drive bay??

Most of the experience has been negative on T43/p, most likely because of the SATA/PATA bridge chip and on T43's and X41's I wouldn't even bother messing with flaky adapters but go ahead and do a proper SATA mod.

Agreed. For a t43/p, a proper sata mod is the right way to go. Sata to pata then to sata again? Nah, that's a recipe for migraines.

I've been toying with the idea of fitting an SSD into my T42. you can get a "proper" 60 gb ssd for as little as 60 bucks now. Then an ultrabay adapter, throw in a cheap CF card in the main bay and you're set.

Yup, I just received a SATA Modded T43p from RBS (KUDOS!), and it is really convincing with a Samsung 830.
So far I notice that it is a bit cooler under the right palm rest, compared to the T42p with SATA adapter,
but the fan ist significantly louder.

Johann, I have another T43p, not-SATA modded, and if I will find the time over the weekend,
I will give it a try with the PATA to SATA adapter and report back.

The T43p uses the M24 fan, which is known to be louder than the M10 that is used in the T41p/T42p.
The M10 fan will also fit/work quiet(er) in the T43p, without any problems.
TPFanControl, NHC or their newer competitior IBM_ECW (see also: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=104389 ) should take care of lower RPMs.

I have previously posted the successful use of a 1.8" mSTATA drive in my T42 using a mSATA to IDE convertor and the Shapeways hard drive bay adapter.
Sadly my T42 has given up recently (issue with the video chip) so if anyone is interested in buying the "SSD conversion kit" from me then send me a note.
The "kit" would consist of the following parts:

- Kingston SSDNOW 180 V+ 64GB (part no. SVP180S2/64G)
- mSTATA to IDE converter ordered from Amazon as mentioned on the forum
- Shapeways Thinkpad hard drive bay adapter as designed by one of the forum members

I can answer this question with a regrettably "no" - because I actually grabbed it myself!

The very good news is however that you probably shouldn't be too sad about this, because my good friend Gary (user GACrabill) recently posted a very interesting alternative (and perhaps better?) approach to speeding up a T4x/p through adding a fast mSATA SSD... read for yourself in the thread New SSD opt. for T4x: mSATA-to-IDE adapter ST663FD9 *PICS*

Please report back here if you take that route - I'm actually quite tempted to try it myself!

Here's the link to purchase the 3D printed adapter caddy:
http://www.shapeways.com/model/254626/t ... terialId=6
And here's a link to purchase the bridge adapter:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-SATA-1-8- ... 2c76a1bb50
And finally, plenty of 1.8" SSDs to pick from:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... ageSize=20

I recently decided to take a stab at installing the setup into my trusty T22 Thinkpad in hopes of breathing new life into it. While everything fits, I didn't realize that the security screw for the caddy cover is actually secured to one of the screw holes on a standard IDE drive. Basically there's no way to security it without a nut of some kind to be fixed to the 3D printed caddy. :(

Hi Johan,

I'm going to go with Gary's suggestion for my T40. I just ordered the caddy so will prob take 3-4 wks to arrive. I imagine I can use an mSATA drive in that.

My 2x1GB RAM upgrade is arriving on Monday to replace the original 256MB, so step 1 of reviving the T40 is getting close.

I'm still not decided on the OS.

Hi Johan,

I got the mSATA caddy today and together with a Crucial 64GB mSATA SSD, my T40 is now happily running Win7 Ultimate.

The boot time on Win XP with the original 256MB RAM was anywhere up to 10 mins, with frequent hanging especially while web browsing.

When I upgraded to 2GB, boot time was down to about 70 seconds, and is now 38 seconds with the SSD and Win7.

Many Thanks

I found this thread after problems with an ultrabay SATA HD getting mangled - the IDE to 1.8 SATA adapter that fits the excellent Tomatenfish caddy above is now available on this link -

https://www.microsatacables.com/ide-44- ... 4-1-8msata

Thanks for all the ideas! Haven't tried it yet but feel well equipped now.
