Advanced dock Fan switch mod.

#1 Post by QWERTY Andreas » Tue Jul 21, 2015 9:23 am

Hi
I just wanted to show you a little mod i did to my advanced dock: I cut a wire, and added a switch for the small fan near the PCIe port.

It works well, and i figured that there is no reason to have that little and loud fan on all the time :)

Next thing is to replace the PSU fan, or make a switch for it.. Prefferably replace it.

what does this offending noisy fan looks like? There are plenty of better quieter fans out there also idea of adjusting fan speed could do trick for you.

Cheers, thinkpadcollection

How about a temperature-controlled fan? :)

It's tiny, something like 25mm. About the size of a CPU fan.

As precip9 said its very small.. Like a fan from a laptop. Furthermore it takes air in from above, and blow it out through the side :?

That would be nice! But i dont think its possible tbh.. I monitor the temps. If they are going to be too high (likehwne about to playing games or so) i turn on the fan :)

I've considered this same mod, although with a rocker rather than a toggle. While it might more tactile, the toggle stands out a bit too much as a repair or mod. The rocker would be more flush, and only a ThinkPadder would notice it being out of place.

Still, you did the mod.

Its actually not very hard to do - so just go ahead :)

The reason i used a toggle is that i had it for free, and it is much easier to fit into the dock - just make a hole. A rocker will be harder to mod into the dock.

And to be honest - when sitting at the desk, you cannot see it because the docks ultrabay slot is covering it.

I do see round rocker switches which fit into round holes too.

I think I may order one of those, but it will probably rest in a drawer until I get all my other back burner projects done. :)
