IBM ThinkPad Color

Does anyone know what the color code is for the IBM ThinkPad? Its like a charcole Black. not a real black.
I'm restoring my IBM ThinkPad 600 and as every ThinkPad user seen the 600's palmrest always got worn away. mines not bad at all just a few scuffs. I like the top of the LCD cover as the rubber texture "on all ThinkPad T series" but on the palmrest it kinda wears off witch as I remember my 600 has it and my X21. Also is the color easy to find in a store? I don't want to use any black as it would make it look offset from the real color.

>see below,my sign>.....Maybe U wana look @ getting the 700T - the first "TABLET" and VERY ADVANCED for its time.
Its a very intresting machine - from the design and technonogy point of view; 700T= first of 'the start' HAND HELP type! ......:Hard Drive:= being the orgional "ssd" of the time , etc etc

I have one of them, never really used still in origional IBM FACTORY BOX etc ,,,,,,might something I would like my grandkids to see in year 3000+ maybe ! lol

Yeah I plan on keeping all my ThinkPads. I got most of them real cheap off ebay, in cheap around $40 Some where damaged but still work. I spend the time restoring them to like new factory form. Even get the design for Windows stickers and Intel Inside or if lucky find them intact on the palmrest and reglue them back on. Even did some services on my ThinkPad website where some people would send there ThinkPad in to get refurbished to like new again. My very first ThinkPad I ever used and owned was the IBM ThinkPad 560X. My oldest ThinkPad I have is the 755CD, IBM's very first ThinkPad to have a buit-in CD-ROM Drive in 1994.

My 2 ThinkPads I really want to get fixed are my T40 and A30 as there Graphics cards are doing the can't pickup or move the laptop or it will freeze. They both have ATi graphics cards.

I posted a thread about painting my z61t with black Plasti-dip over here:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=90423

I've had mixed results but I haven't given up on the project yet. If you'd like I can post a comparison picture of the finish with a T42 that has the authentic Thinkpad finish.

Here is a comparison picture:
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk15 ... G_1279.jpg

The plasti-dip finish is darker and has a more textured feel than the T42, but the T42 is also 5 years, so the finish maybe have changed a bit.

Thanks for the name of the paint they use. $6.00 for a can online. I like the rubberized tops aswell. My X21 and 600 has the rubberized palmrest aswell as the top LCD lid. Even my 755CD on the top of the palmrest above the keyboard is rubberized along the top LCD lid and even the inside lid, plus the bottom is too. I think just the small plastic below the keyboard and the keyboard its self are the only thing not painted with the black Plasti-dip spray. I think it really makes the ThinkPads sturdy and solid.

I picked up the Plasti-dip at Home Depot for around $5.50.

Krylon has a rubberized undercoat paint for autos that might work too. Saw it at Home Depot and Walmart. Was around $7 a can.

Well havn't gotton around to getting the Black paint for my ThinkPads yet. But working on my next project. Restoring the stickers. I went to make the Windows XP sticker and came out fine on plain white paper, but the lettering was a bit fuzzy. I tryed using tinfoil but the ink don't stick and it smers. When I make stickers I print it on a white paper and place a fine ducky clear tape over it and then cut it out. But what does microsoft use for the silver coloring? If anyone ever had the XP stickers coming apart and even the Intel centrino. theres the clear cover over the ink on the tinfoli looking silver. I'm not talking about Windows XP COA Key. Im talking about the Desinged for Microsoft Windows XP sticker found on the palmrest. Would like to redo the intel stickers too as you can't find them anymore like Intel Pentium II or III. and where do you find good sharp pics of the stickers for print or is it my printer. I have a new kodak

I've used the same guy Ron. He can't show pics of XP, Vista, or W7 stickers, but you can ask for them via an EBay message if you send your email address. Great seller, and very reliable.

One of the small touches I do to the refurbs I build is replace the stickers.I want them to look like new, even if they are a few years old! Typically Ill order 10 or so of the same kind. Its a little bit of a pain, because it takes 14 days or so to get them here, but with some planning its all good.

I'm upgrading my lenovo ThinkPad SL500, I mean my IBM ThinkPad SL500 with the old IBM ThinkPad logo. It was very noticeable back in the day when all the ThinkPads were only black with the Red/Green/Blue IBM and silver ThinkPad below it, and could tell out of any other brand that it was a IBM ThinkPad. It was always located on the bottom right corner "closed" and was tilted sideways much like the new ThinkPad only logo is now.

In my images I have my SL500 next to my ThinkPad T60 15" widescreen model, that was the last model to feature the IBM ThinkPad Logo along with X60/R60.

I'm making a small paper filler cover that goes over the ThinkPad logo so not to ruin it if ever wanting it back.

As for the paint color I use a small amout on the paper cover of the Black Plasti dip. The color and feel is great old time ThinkPad 600 look/feel. can't wait to redo my 600's palmrest.

A test before glue on, use a sharpi to blacken the edges of the paper cover, as seen in the image you can see alittle white on the edges. Next use a Ross Stik Washable glue stick Acid free on the black paper cover.

I couldn't get the mirror shine on the top and only had Black gloss, the palmrest cover turned out very great. looks like factory done.

Did anyone ever paint the red and blue mouse button stripes back on the mouse buttons?
I own a IBM ThinkPad Z60m and miss the color coded buttons, like the R4/R5/T4 seires had. Gray top keys and purple Enter key and the red left/right mouse buttons.
Pics would be nice to see.

Also as a note, I did paint my ThinkPad 600 with the rubber Plasti-dip paint, it worked for awail but it started to rub off, For anyone that used the Plasti-dip, do you have to paint more than 2 coats?

Multiple coats won't do anything. The spray contains a solvent that "melts" the old layer.

My very first Thinkpad was in 2002 after I had graduated highschool :) It was Thinkpad 600e 233Mhz Pentium 2 with 288MB of RAM and a 20 GB harddrive. Ever since than I have stuck with IBM now Lenovo. I cant see getting another laptop from a different brand.

So I did a bios update on my IBM ThinkPad Z60m and it replaced the IBM ThinKPad Splash logo screen to the new THINKPAD a Product of lenovo one. How Do I get it back to the old IBM ThinKPad splash.

On my IBM ThinkPads T60/R60/X60/X60T and Z60m I'm going to get red and blue paint and paint the strips back on the mouse buttons. I removed the IBM ThinkPad logos off my SL500 as it was a test and didn't think it looked good on the newer model ThinkPads. Plus the rubbing of the hand over the sticker would peal it off after awail, witch seeing why the logos were duged into the palmrest.
