Having trouble accessing forum

#1 Post by leftbrain99 » Fri Apr 23, 2010 5:02 pm

I have only been able to load the forum from any machine on my home network maybe 1% of the time - literally. I'm sure there is something with a router setting. I honestly assumed for months that the forum host server went down every night. I could access it all day at work and never at night. Then I suddenly made a connection that it's not time of day, but my location. Duh! It really boggles my mind. I found a thread here about someone needing to use an ip address url and I was sure that would solve my problem! But it didn't :(

Any ideas on what to look for would be most appreciated. I use my phone to load the web page, but that's not always fun.

What sort of Internet connection do you have?
Dial-up, cable, DSL or what?
What is the "back door" url you are using?

If you have cable or DSL, try hooking a Thinkpad directly to the DSL or cable modem, eliminating the router.

http://67.214.227.38/~thinkpad/forum/

There is a thread somewhere in this forum where I found that address and it was the only way some people could access the site.

I tried connecting to the router via CAT-5 (it's a combo cable modem & router that Time-Warner provides) and still had no luck with either.

I'm an electrical engineer and worked in telecom and access networks for years, so I have some knowledge in this area. But this baffles me.

Funny, it was me who discovered and mentioned that "backdoor" somewhere in the middle of 2009.

Try changing the DNS servers in your router WAN setup, using these openDNS servers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Yeah. This crappy Ambit U10C019 Modem/Router allows for very little configuration, so no custom DNS settings...

Thanks, but no. I don't have the same problem those guys were having. I can log into the router to perform configuration and I can do port forwarding, etc. There just seems to be no way to alter DNS settings.

If someone else can find anything in this user guide, maybe I'm just missing it, but I've never seen anything like this.

I wasn't having much luck with that using my no-ip.com account. It's also not exactly what I'm used to doing when modifying DNS settings. Most routers let you do that manually without using an outside service like this, right?

Yeah, I believe you are correct about most routers.

Something I would look into is replacing your HOSTS file. You should be able to Google how to do this.

I stumbled across some information on the HOSTS file on another forum...

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

The information in the link is useful for blocking unwanted parasites (of course forum.thinkpads.com is not one).
