T23 numbers?

#1 Post by JimL » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:25 pm

I'm considering the purchase of a used T23. What is the significance of the T23 numbers 2647 and 2648? Are there other such numbers?

Is the presence of either 1 or 2 USB ports related to the newness of the T23? (I know some people are not aware that some T23's come with only 1.)

Could you please be kind enough to explain why you think some T23's have 2 USB ports and some have only 1?

Thank you.

First I read it in descriptions on eBay, then I saw in accompanying pictures of the rear panel. I don't remember if I saw anything about it in reviews.

Also I noted that one guy said there was one while the picture showed two. But there are definitely pictures showing only one vertical USB port. The pictures with two show two vertical ports very close together. Of course in both the above cases the pictures could have been the wrong ones.

Some eBay Sellers use other's pictures or other model numbers to save time on taking a new picture. The older T2* Laptops look basically the same as the T23s...

Yeah, a lot use "stock" photos, and often not what you are actually getting. And, often these so called professionals don't have a clue as to what they are selling. I recently bought a T30. It was a real POS so I returned it and made a deal on another model which included the UltraNav touchpad (even though I wasn't real hip on using it). He sent me a different model, saying it was the same but in reality it wasn't as it didn't include the UltraNav. When I questioned him about it he told me all Thinkpads include the UltraNav regardless of what the specs at IBM say. I sent him a picture of the original agreed on model and the one I received that has no UltraNav.

I bought a "T23" on ebay, that was actually a T22 with a T23 keyboard. So when you opened it up it said it was a T23. But when I got it and checked it on IBMs website it said it was a T22.

Be careful with the T2x buying on ebay.

According to the IBM tawbook, there were 48 different T23 models. All of them were type "2647" with model numbers being "2647-xxx". Also, all 48 models come with 2 USB 1.1 ports. I think IBM is more reliable about these issues than any reseller.

If you're considering buying on eBay, either buy from a reputable dealer (and before anyone starts an eBay rant there are some) or ask for the model and serial number of the machine you're considering and check the IBM sites for warranty and parts info on the machine (see item #7 in the FAQ).

I've found the tawbook does not list every type. For instance, for the T30 it only lists type 2366 but there is in fact a 2367, I had one, and it is supported on IBM's site, just not listed in the tawbook.

Interesting to know and worth remembering.

To quote myself from another post "I'm not sure IBM/Lenovo can adequately explain the difference between 2647 & 2648". I've never paid much attention to the "Type" numbers.

I think that for the OP's benefit in this thread, the important thing is that excepting certain eBay sellers, everyone (IBM, members here, etc.) agree that all T23's have 2 USB ports.
