DVD drive upgrade

#1 Post by vspec » Sun Jan 22, 2006 6:36 pm

I have a T23 and was wondering if I could upgrade the DVD drive to a burner that's not from IBM? I was looking at the NEC ND6650a and wonder if such drives work on the thinkpad models...

As long as the I/O interface (IDE) is the same, it should work. I use a third party mfg CDRWDVD on my T23 without any problem. Watch your interface though, I bought a DeltaElectronics 24X drive from an E-stealer and the interface is completely foreign.

The NEC 6550a you linked to will work but requires some simple modification. Check out this thread for info: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=19484
