Performance: 512MB 1GH T22 vs 128MB 1.13GH T23?

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Thu Jan 26, 2006 4:01 pm

Which one of these would be peppier for stuff like web browsing? Each machine would be using a 5400 rpm drive. Will the T23's faster bus and ATA interface make up for the performance hit from the small amount of memory? I'm running XP pro, BTW.

(Here's the deal. I have a T22 with 512MB installed, and two PC100 128MB sticks lying around and I just got a T23 with 128MB that won't take either of the 256MB sticks in my T22, so I'm trying to figure how to go about ebaying the old memory to end up with 1GB in the T23.)

Personally, I think that the T22 would be peppier, since there is a drastic difference between 512mb and 128mb. I think that the difference between the 1.133 and 1.0 processors would be minimal.

I would agree with the t22 512mb.

Unless you're running win98 or linux on the t23, the 128 megs will be filled with OS stuff with little room remaining for your browser+cache. The faster bus won't make up the difference because the bottleneck is the harddrive, no matter what RPM.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the price of new pc133 laptop memory is on the rise due to a decrease in manufacturers.

You may still be able to get a good deal on ebay on used 2x512 sticks, but the bargain now is for used 256meg sticks: I got 2 on ebay a month ago for $43 shipped. You'd have to spend twice that much for one 512 stick, therefore if you can live with 384,or 512megs (most people can on a non-gaming rig) you can make the t23 just as responsive for a good price.

Personally, I'd keep 512 in the t22, and buy 2x256 for the t23 unless you absolutely need the gig. The extra $$ can then go into the t40 fund.

T23 memory is relatively cheap at the moment. I upgrade both my T22 and T23 to 512Mb.
I will upgrade my T23 to 512M... then you have a fall back system, some on this forum upgrade their to 1G and found it to be even faster, esp you you open up many web pages...

Thanks for your comments, you have confirmed what I was thinking. Although I'm eager to play with "new toy," in reality, the only difference is in performance, so until I have more RAM I'll have to leave it aside.

Since what I have is a complete T22 and the bottom half of a T23, I won't need to keep memory for the T22 as I will be selling it as a mobo replacement or totally parting it out.

Because PC133 is cheaper per MB than PC100 on ebay (though PC100 has fallen in price close to 20% in the last year, it may be that the T23s have replaced T22s as the ubiquitous cheap T2x on ebay), I should be able to even trade my 768MB of PC100 for 1 GB of PC133. Since a T4x is not even a blip on the horizon, I'm maxing out the performance of the T23. I do some Photoshopping and video editing on it, so RAM is good.
