All right, what did I do? CPU Upgrade.

#1 Post by arizona » Sat Oct 23, 2010 4:21 pm

So I got a new to me t30 today and had a few minutes to fool around with it. I decided I would upgrade to the 2.0 P4 CPU. The numbers on the chip are 3314A681 SL6FK RH80532 2000/512. The FRU is 91P7203.

Anyway, being the hack that I am, I went ahead and installed it. When I got it put back together, it will power up but the screen is totally blank. So, I went back and put in the original chip and the same thing happens. The computer powers up, but the screen is totally blank.

It worked fine before I started toying with it.

The machine has XP on it.

Also, if I take out the ram and try and start up the machine there are no beeps.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

By the way the only two lights on are the battery and the little "z" with the circle around it.

Which is the video cable?

Thanks

Well, I think I figured it out. When I was swapping the cpu chips I didn't get the screw that holds down the cpu chip all the way over to the lock position.

However, the new chip that I got doesn't work (2.0 ghz). Can anyone confirm that I got the right chip for the upgrade. Here's the auction I won. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... _740wt_831

I appreciate it.

That CPU should work just fine, assuming it is not defective.

R40 and the T30 use different CPUs, appears to be the wrong chip.
You need a Pentium 4 Mobile, it appears you purchased a Mobile Pentium.

The SL6FK should work, but it runs hotter and uses more power than the 'proper' T30 2.00GHz CPU, which is the SL6CL.
If you haven't yet, you should download the HMM: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42308

I don't see how that is possible. They both run at 1.3V, 32W Max TDP per Intel. In fact I've never heard of any mobile processor in the same family running at the same speed operating hotter (or cooler) than any other CPU in that family based on the fact that the Intel part numbers are different. Intel doesn't specify different stepping for those two parts either.

I'll give it another shot, but I think either I got a defective chip, or it just doesn't work in the T30. Should the chip be plug and play or is there other steps I need to take to make it work?
