That's a common problem with T30, corrupt videoRAM, where external monitor works but not internal LCD.
Learn to live with it or replace the motherboard.

I tried looking up more info on this "common problem", can't seem to find references...

but i did find a post here where someone had the same thing, worked only from an external...

Maybe it helps somebody
That whole thread was a good read as well. Several people talk about bad Hitachi LCD's being the issue. Others talk of bad GPU connections (apparently there are 2 seperate video lines coming out, one for the lcd and one for the external)

@RBS: Can you provide some links where the common problem you mentioned is talked about? I plan to add a T30 to my collection eventually and want to document all I can :)

It may not necessarily be called bad videoRAM, but bad GPU, "LCD not working but external monitor does work" and things like that.
Happy reading:

I've completely given up on them, too bulky/heavy and only USB1.1
My current road companion is an X60s, which gives me over 9 hours on a (new) 8-cell battery.
