[SOLVED] Non-Diskette BIOS Upgrade Utility doesn't work

#1 Post by singbad » Fri Jul 29, 2011 6:41 pm

Hi,
I got a 2.03b BIOS and a 1.03 embedded controller firmware version.
Tried to update using the "Non-Diskette BIOS Upgrade Utility" but it gets stuck in shutting down Windows (normal shutdown works).

Since it's called "Non-Diskette" - is there a diskette based utility available?

Best regards,
singbad

Yes, and that's the one that I would always recommend using. For the T23, they can be found here:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-39362 (BIOS)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-40021 (EC)

Ooppss... sorry, I thought you were talking about a T23. The BIOS revision looks like a T30

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42720 (T30 BIOS)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-42711 (T30 EC)

Thanks for the links (and for guessing my Thinkpad model) :-) This was just in time as lenovo will remove the files tomorrow.

I understand I'll first have to update the embedded controller to version 1.05 and consecutively update the BIOS to 2.10, then again the controller to 1.07, right?

I'm no BIOS/EC update expert, but when updating from such an old version, it should be fine to go ahead and update to the latest BIOS version (2.10) and then immediately update the EC to 1.07. I don't think that I've ever had to load any intermediate versions. But then again, I only perform the updates if I have a problem with the system and it's known to be cured by the update.

As per IBM instructions, always update the BIOS first, then the ECP.

How do I have to read these IBM instructions?
BIOS Version : 2.10 (1IET71WW)
Diskette Version : 2.10
======================================================================

Notice:
-------
For all users:
- This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program
Version 1.05 (or higher). Please obtain the additional package,
Embedded Controller Program Version 1.05 (or higher), and update
Embedded Controller Program in the system with it.

- If you need to update Embedded Controller Program as well as the
BIOS, update BIOS first.
Will I have to upgrade stepwise, BIOS and EC alternatingly?

What BIOS version should I use as an intermediate stage?

The BIOS and Embedded Controller updates are cumulative. In other words the latest version will contain all the previous versions fixes and tweak so there is no reason to do the updates in steps.

Just update the BIOS first to the latest version and then update the embedded controller. As long as you do the updates one right after the other there is no concern about IBM comment of "This BIOS version will only work with Embedded Controller Program
Version 1.05 (or higher).
" IBM is only concerned about long term usage where someone updates only the BIOS and not the embedded controller.

All done :-)

I updated BIOS 2.10 via diskette and then EC 1.07 the 'normal' way. I guess BIOS version 1.03b simply did not allow a non-diskette update.

Thanks for your help!

I'm trying to find the diskette version of the T30 last BIOS update, any suggestions. Lenovo doesn't seem to have it listed, and their maddening site keeps dumping me to the default support page.
