Different types of Ultrabays

#1 Post by cadillacmike68 » Sat Sep 03, 2011 9:50 am

One of the reasons i like T-series over the others is the Ultrabay. But there are at least 2, 3 or more (newest ones for current Lenovo offerings are different then even T60 series).

This seems to confuse some folks (like me), and with me skipping completely over the T40 series ThinkPads, I'm wondering if there are more than 2 sizes of Ultrabay for T20, 30, 40 and 60 series.

We'll leave out the original Ultrabay from the old 700 series (I actually have a few of these items for my 760) that goes under the flip-up keyboard.

ThinkPad T20 series and T30 all took the Ultrabay 2000, which we'll call the Ultrabay. It's about 1.5mm taller than the later ones and has a larger connector. FRU 08K6067 id the HDD tray. No SATA drives originally but someone now makes and sells a SATA compatible tray for this size

Then the T60 series (what no T50 series!) has the Ultrabay "Slim" - is that what IBM / Lenovo called it? Not as tall, SATA style adapter inside and out on the HDD tray, although i had from a long time ago an IBM Ultrabay tray that fits in the T61 but holds the older PATA (IDE) drives. When i bought this The T60 series didn't exist, so is this a T40 series tray?? My FRU is 62P4553.

Then I have two oddities,

FRU 13N5113 looks like a little sleeve just 3 edges no bottom or front with what looks like a SATA era input with the Ultrabay 2000 connector. I wonder if this will allow my T61 trays to fit in my T30s? Maybe not because it would still be too short??? No Go - the rne tabs of the sleeves want to fit into something and her tray won't allow it.

FRU 62P4556 This one looks to be similar to the above bit it has a plastic floor. Maybe this is the one that allows the T61 HDD tray to go in the T30s??? It does seem to allow one of her trays, FRU 62P4553 to fit in a T22 or T30.

There must have been a third tray size, was this what IBM called Ultrabay "Enhanced"?? If so I have the tray adapter to put one in a T20/ 30 series ThinkPads. Maybe I should just list every FRU I have so folks can tell me what they are, but I'm going boating so I'll be back tonight.

One last question / thought: did any other Thinkpad series use these Ultrabays, other than the T-series above??

The following ThinkWiki page explains the different types of Ultrabays, which computers had each type, and which types are compatible with one another. A very informative read.

So they are only designed to let you swap the optical drives. I guess I'll have to buy that UB2000 SATA tray after all.

Lost of links to 307-ibm.com on the thinkwiki site. Someone has a LOT of updating to do...
