T60p big issues

#1 Post by Vali » Thu Jul 14, 2011 6:10 pm

Hello guys,

Got a T60p back in 2007. A couple of month ago battery went dead. Now laptop doesn't start at all.

Symptoms description:
When I plug in the power, the power supply LED (the plug) comes on, when I push power button, it goes off (the power supply LED) and doesn't do anything else. Repeat the power plug in the same thing happens. The fan doesn't spin, no beeps, no lights, nothing. The power ON LED doesn't come on, LCD doesn't flash.
A couple of times it did the same, but somehow it started and worked ok for the rest of the day.

I thought that it's power button itself, replaced keyboard with new one, the same story.
Dissasembled the thing, a small part of the thermal pad on the GPU remained on the GPU.

The fan was rattling, but being cold I took some time before cleaning it.

Any advices please?

Thank you in advance,
Vali.

The machine is the first one in my signature.

Remove the battery, hard and media drives and RAM.

Power up with adapter only.

Does the machine beep?

I have stripped the machine completely.
It's just the motherboard, the LCD and the keyboard connected toghether.
Nothing changed... I took the fan and RAM off too. I just wanted to get some "output".
What can it be?
I really love this machine.
I want to make run again.

Regards,
Vali.

My guess is that you'll need a replacement board.

If the planar doesn't beep with RAM removed, it's likely as good as dead.

One last thing I'd try before ditching the board would be a different CPU.

Good luck.

Unplug the AC and battery and go through a "reset" sequence

Press the power button 10 times at 1 second interval, then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Replace the battery and then plug in the AC.

I've done the reset sequence, no result.

There are 2 things that need to be clarified:
- Power brick check, to ensure it's ok;
- CPU check to isolate what is the problem, CPU or planar.

The CPU check is the hardest part, there are few C2D laptops nowadays and to spend well in excess of $100 for a planar, only to find out that the CPU is the culprit, is a bit over budget for now.

Thank you very much for your support,
Vali.

BTW, my location is now Sydney, NSW, Australia.

You can test that board with a simple Core Duo, such as T2300/2400/2500/2600/2700 - it doesn't have to be C2D.

Good luck.

Or even cheaper: the Core Solo T1300 (Intel SL8VY).

Got a new motherboard installed.
It's the older model with ATI Fire GL 5200 instead of 5250, that used to be shipped with Core Duo (T2XX). My CPU is T7600, it boots fine first time, after all capacitors empty and afterwards it won't boot. When I poke into the BIOS it recognizes the CPU but frequency is displayed as "???".
Bios is ver 1.1.

Now what can I do?

Thank you very much for any suggestion.

Vali.

Update the bios to 2.27. At 2.12 support for core 2 duo was added.
