Non working display on my T60

#1 Post by llamov » Fri Dec 06, 2013 10:16 am

Hello Folks:
I have a T60, 1951-4TU. Yesterday I noticed that the display occasionally dimmed, then returned to it's original brightness.

Now after it's been on a few minutes, the screen goes black. When I close the lid and reopen it after a few seconds, it comes back on. . .for awhile. While it's off, there is still a dim image which indicates to me that the backlight is off.

I do have a non working T60 with a working display I can use for parts.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how I might get my laptop working properly again.

Try swapping the inverter board over, if they are compatible. The inverter board sits just below the display on the right hand side.

I would swap the LCD lids, much easier than taking apart the two LCD assemblies, especially if it turns out to be the CCFL and not the inverter.

The T60 is especially easy. Remove the keyboard, palm rest, keyboard bezel, WiFi antenna connections, two screws on LCD ribbon cable and four screws holding the assembly in place. Lift and separate.

Yes, lots of screws to remove but reassembling an LCD lid is more difficult to do right.

I'm wondering if it could be a loose connection. I walked away for about 40 minutes with the cover open, and when I returned the display was still on. When I'm on it, it will sometimes go for only a couple of minutes before cutting out.

Despite it's age, this old T60 is still the best performing and most reliable computer I've ever owned. I've owned computers since 1989.

Looks to me like your CCFL is on it's way out...completely. I recommend swapping lids like 91011 suggests. It's certainly the easiest way to fix it. Replacing a CCFL is just too much trouble IMHO (yes I have done it a few times, but know better now).

I'll have to agree with Neil.

I think I might of gotten the wrong CCFL, it was smaller in length by at most 3 centimeters.
I thought it was gonna be not so hard, til you see the screens inside the LCD when you open it and the CCFL housing requires the unit to be assembled a cartain way...
