T61 QXGA Frankenpad LCD (or nvidia?) issue.

#1 Post by mdancer » Mon Feb 02, 2015 7:34 pm

Recently my X9100 Frankenpad with QXGA screen has started to get blank after some time. It looks like overheating of something. After cold start I can work 5-10 minutes before screen goes blank. If you I send laptop to suspend or change from xorg screen to text console in linux it returns to life for awhile. However after a few iterations screen goes blank after 5-10 seconds and I have to switch it off for some time.

I ordered new(used) inverter. However, not sure what could be a problem. This is nvidia board and I'm wondering if it could be nvidia bug? I also noticed that vga output stopped to show green color i.e. external screen is violent instead of white:). Also I'd used video-undervolted bios for X9100. I've switched to bios with higher video voltages however it didn't helped.

Could it be related with X9100 cpu? It is the latest lower power stepping. I haven't done pinmod for the 266 fsb, just overclocked occasionally, so the cpu works at 2.4 GHz usually. Unfortunately I don't have any other CPU for a test.

Any help is appreciated.

Hmmm...my money would be on GPU failing as opposed to the screen.

Do you have any other newer (60-series or later) ThinkPad that you could test the LCD assembly on?

No, but I think it would be my next move to buy an additional T60 if inverter will not help. Probably I should have started with this.

Didn't you have an X61 of some kind or I'm mixing stuff up?

Yes I have a X61s and X61 Tablet. Could LCD assembly be tested on them?

I'm fairly certain that the LCD connection on the planar is the same so I'd say "yes".

I'd leave the tablet alone and use X61s as a testbed, but those are your toys...

Good luck.

Unforchanatly X61s has much smaller LCD connector than T60, seems the same as in X200 model. So I'll wait for the inverter first.

It seems, that I have CCFL backlight issue. I've change an inverter and LCD started to work much longer until a black-out. Moreover there is one member of the forum who had exactly the same issue and change of back-light helped him.
