I don't own one myself so can't comment much about the experience, but thought others might be interested that someone has started doing non-SSE3 builds of Android 4 / ICS for X41 tablet:
http://groups.google.com/group/android- ... b506507c53

the author writes that this should work fairly well on any machine with a Pentium M processor and 915/gma900 chipset. so, potentially (according to the wiki anyway) - R52, T43, X41, Z60m, Z60t. makes a little more sense for tablets, obviously, but trackpoint input works fine too.

also, the fact that the author got Wacom input working is good news for us with X61t, I think - that, audio and sleep are the things currently not working on my X61t, so hopefully will make its way into the official builds.

just a quick note if it wasn't too obvious - these (this x41t guy's, as well as all the generic android-x86 releases) are livecd builds in addition to being installers. iso files generally in the 100-200mb range.

so, they'll work perfectly fine if you put them on a usb key using e.g. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ and you can try it without installing. (in fact, unetbootin will let you set aside space for persistent storage, although last time I tried that it was just way too slow so I don't recommend it - just leave it at '0')

(I happened to install it and now triple-booting win7x64, android, and kubuntu64 on my x61t, crazy)

getting further off-topic, I did try this x41t build (btw don't take the one from the first comment, there is an updated build down that thread) on my x61t just to see if the digitizer driver worked but no luck. other than that it seemed pretty normal.

It works well (with caveats) on my x41 1866-6SU. I installed it onto a spare 60gb 1.8" Hitachi I had lying around.

Issues:
-) WiFi doesn't work (Intel 2915ABG)
-) BT doesn't work (HonHai BT/Modem combo card)
-) No autorotation of screen (rotate button doesn't work)
-) No Live Wallpaper (Stefan is working on the video driver it seems)
-) Sleep... it won't wake up from sleep. :P

Discrepancies:
-) I'm not noticing calibration (pen/screen) issues that others have. It seems to be spot on across the entire display.

As I can't seem to get WiFi working, I can't check out the Market and install some of my old apps and see how they work in ICS and on the X41t form factor (4:3 screen ftw).

Here's my video of the first boot of ICS on my X41t. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpXUvrwTWaI

Will keep ya'll updated! >:D

awesome video, and so jealous of the pen actually working! (which is sort of the whole point - I agree, x41t/x61t are nearly the perfect platforms for this, and it really is a breath of new life)

the red frame is an indication of a thread taking up more than its fair share of cpu. sort of a visual bell. I've seen suggested some different ways to turn it off, but they haven't worked for me.

not sure about wireless, e.g. my 3945 works great but others have reported their 3945 not working?! as for 2915, you could post a reply to Stefan, maybe your hardware ids don't quite match or he had not included that driver (ah 2915, that's what I had in my X31 and was always something of a pain in linux - think I ended up replacing with atheros)

to test Market you could try wired connection (although this is another thing that has come and gone and come and gone in various builds - I've had ethernet working (and made me smile that the UI bits were all there in Settings) and then in later builds not. there are some active threads about patching it - I'd expect it to return eventually if it doesn't work now.

I've had wildly varying experiences with Market and gapps depending upon release - what version gapps were included vs. fingerprint in build.prop etc.

I have my suspicions about the sleep issue - in the thread, it's mentioned about how the first virtual terminal has been disabled but was somehow necessary to the old sleep/resume method...

in earlier builds (again this is on the x61t, I've been using the asus_laptop builds), resume worked most of the time for me (but could get stuck in weird infinite loops of sleep-resume-sleep-etc). the issue where I think the vt ties in was that, just about any text you entered normally in the UI *would get copied to the console*. ha. and not just copied, but executed. yes. no, really. so there was the double problem of e.g. passwords and keys being passed to the terminal in plaintext, but even more hilariously interpreting anything as a command (I remember needing to do a google search for "reboot something something" and every time I pressed enter, obviously the machine would reboot ha)

so they disabled the vt to prevent that? or just general security reasons of having a root terminal open all the time.

oh, there was also something entertaining where if I set a pattern lock in Settings->Security, the screen lock would work just fine, but then I could *never ever ever* get into Security again. I haven't revisited that because I could never find a way to revert.

rotation will be another nice feature, Stefan mentioned he was working on getting the hdaps functional. hotkeys shouldn't be more than finding the right mapping for the bezel keycodes (I've done similar for an arm tablet)

so yeah, much to be done but so promising. I'm still amazed how usable it is, esp compared to my horrible experience trying out chromeOS on the same hardware.

Interesting thread, thanks or sharing! :thumbs-UP: Definitely something I need to try in my X41T!

I also put it on an X41t. Made a small partition and dual booted it. Same issues. Bluetooth turns on and sees devices but won't pair.

WIFI won't work, no matter what. Wired ethernet doesn't show up either.

Tried it on two X41ts. One with bluetooth, one without. Ran it live and installed.
Same issues.

It'll give this little machine a new lease on life. Very fast. Gotta get the bugs worked out.

Tried it myself too. Seems to be quite nice and responsive! The same things reported above didn't work. WiFi/Bluetooth/Sound/Sleep/Tablet Buttons. I also tried connecting to the internet via ethernet, and that didn't seem to work either. :( Would be cool if the auto-rotate could use the Thinkpad's APS accelerometer to rotate the screen when in tablet mode, Somehow I was expecting that, and the SD-Card reader to function too.

I wouldn't ever want to use android over my current OS, though. Windows 7 Ultimate works perfectly for me.

Stefan's latest version has the auto-rotation working. The others... not quite yet. Though, please bear in mind this is not even what I would call beta-level software; still alpha stages.

I need to find out what happened to my X41t so I can report back to Stefan so we can get WiFi working on the base 2200/2915 WiFi cards...

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that he is running a modified bios in his x41t.

I think that's the root of the problem, along with the ath9k wifi card in the system...

I have run this from usb and everything seems ok. Can anyone help me with an install tutorial? I partitioned my drive for a dual boot, ubuntu + ICS but cannot get ICS to install.

Have this installed on my X41t now. It is quite the slick OS. Everything seems to be working as it should. I would like a 'swype' keyboard as it would make input much easier. Machine seems to run at a higher temp than on Ubuntu or WinXP. No pen enabled either for note taking. All in all I like it.

Yeh, I put it on also.

You can make notes with note everything, but you have to use paint note. You can make the brush thin like a pencil. It'll remember the settings.

If you find another one that works better, let me know.

I can't get it to see the SD card yet. I haven't figured that out yet.

All in all, it works very well. Very fast.

This build boots fine on ThinkPad X32 (Pentium M + ATI Mobility Radeon 7000).

What works:
- WiFi ("Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG")
- sound ("SoundMAX Integrated")
- trackpoint, brightness controls, Google applications & services (Market, GMail, Browser, Calendar) excluding Youtube

What doesn't work:
- GPU accel. - only VESA
- the resolution is 800x600 instead of 1024x768
- "sleep" (go to Settings > Devices > Display and change the "Sleep" value from "1 minute" to "30 minutes" & avoid "locking" the screen)
- most of the games in the Market are missing (I'm not sure if they're not compatible with x86 or they rely on OpenGL ES acceleration)

Many "modern" Android apps are fairly usable without a touchscreen as Android 4.0 brought improved mouse support. Many keyboard shortcuts work as expected (Alt+Tab to switch between the apps, Ctrl+W in tabbed Browser, Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V).

I would like to know if Radeon 7000 drivers will allow "hardware accelerated 2D rendering" on X32 :))

SD card = SD card slot
when using the SD card slot, sometimes suspend doesn't work properly
to use the SD card slot, you need to add SDCARD=/dev/mmcblk0 to the kernel command line (in Grub)
copied from Stefan's page at: http://stefanseidel.info/index.php?view ... 6-progress
Hope this helps, Keith

New build is out at:
http://groups.google.com/group/android- ... bd67cf7bd#

I haven't tried it yet as I'm waiting for the change log. Next for me is trying to get swype keyboard to install.

Heyo kge420, it's Brian from the android-x86 threads. Great to see you both here and there!

Just an FYI to all, the new ThinkPad_Universal image is only geared toward the X41 Tablet, X61 Tablet, and X220 Tablet. The regular laptop versions of those three systems should work as well. Likewise, the thinkpad_x41 image is for the X41. Using these images on other systems most likely will not work right at all (no wifi, bluetooth, 3d hardware acceleration, etc etc).

What about the X60/X60T, will the image also work on these models?

Hello http302 - Brian, likewise. My X41t is running very well. I thought I would post in both forums to try and gain as much traction for this project as possible. If you know of any way I can help out with this let me know. My cmd skills are limited but I am good at persistence. My mom called it hard headed, stubborn, etc. Take care, Keith

Give it a shot and see if it works? IIRC the X61 is just an up-spec of the X60, so...

Let us know and we can report back to the developers (or you can join in the chaos and fun of OS development too :D).

This kind of makes me wonder if the X201t will work with the thinkpad_universal image...

Actually I'm very tempted, but I have to issues:

- Lack of time
- My X60T has a supervisor password and I cannot boot from anything else than the HD

The first problem could be easily solved this weekend  . For the second one I was thinking of installing the image in a spare HD installed in my X61s, then moving the HD to the X60T, but since I never did an Android installation I have no clue if this makes sense at all. Such an approach could work with Win7 just after the first stage of the install, but what about Android? Which are the basic steps of the install? Does it requires a reboot at some point?

You may be SOL with the install on another drive. You are prompted for the supervisor password before boot options. Password is not on the drive but the machine. Looking at your sig you have many other candidates. This can be run from a usb stick without installing. Good if you just want to try and not commit.

I'm aware of this, but swapping drives was the only option I could think of...

I think it will be more fun to try Android on a tablet, but maybe I should follow your advice and try Android on the X61s first to gain some experience. I know the procedure mentioned in my prev. post would work fine with Linux and could even work well with Win7. Has somebody tried a similar approach with Android?

So, I was doing a "speed Android-Check"... I used a bootable USB Stick with the image posted in the link above.

First tests I did with my X61s.

[*] WLAN kinda worked, but it couldn't get a strong signal from my wi-fi network and lost connection very often (although I was sitting 1m away from my router). I guess this is probably because I'm using a half sized MiniPCIE N Card, which was not originally delivered with the X6x series AFAIK.
[*] Screen resolution was 800x600 (how can be changed?)
[*] I tried some games (some asteroid clone and the lunar lander), they crashed very often
[*] System went once into sleep mode after 1min inactivity (default setting), it did wake up but WLAN connection was lost again
[*] Trying to scan manually for my network cause the screen to go blank and stay like that for a while. I had to do a cold reboot...

I then moved to my X41T

[*] WLAN worked fine. Strong signal, no WLAN blackouts
[*] Screen resolution was @1024x768
[*] Screen rotation works
[*] I tried again the lunar lander, crashed quite often but less than in the X61
[*] System went once into sleep mode after 1min inactivity (default setting), it did wake up with no issues
[*] Tried Chrome and Youtube apps, both worked fine

Will keep on testing the next days. I won't install it in my X41T since I've shortly installed a Mach Xtreme SSD with Win7 and don't want now to disassemble it again to put another ZIF drive.

I know it's a short re-view, just wanted to give my 2 cents... All in all I'm happy with the testing, Android was very responsive in this tablet

Next candidate will be the X60T, more likely on the weekend.

Good night!

Nice to have a side by side comparison of the same OS. Using this on my X41t and it seems to run hotter than with a linux install. Do you notice the same? I also think my battery stats are not being reported correctly. Machine was shutting down last night with about 35% battery remaining. Plugged in it was fine. This amchine has not been apart since I took ownership about 2 years ago and doesn't seem to have ever been apart. May open it up and re-apply thermal paste and give it a good blowing out.

The new build works great on the x41t.

I ran it live on an x60t. Pen and touch won't work. Everything else does. WIFI, games. the browser.

It doesn't seem to be much hotter than xp. I'll put an ir thermometer on the vent this weekend.

I haven't ran it down on battery yet, I'll do that too.

Dave

Installed new build today. Lost Google Music app (now Google Play). Device not supported, worked fine before but that was when it was Google Music so I'm not sure if it's the build of Google or ICS. Not a deal breaker though. It' accessible through a web browser.
