X41 and X41 Tablet, Max RAM = 2.5GBs, confirmed *PIC*

#1 Post by Dimitri_P » Sun Apr 15, 2007 11:03 am

Hi,

Few day ago we were discussing 2GB sticks in T43, since I have some tried and it worked at 2,5GBs total.

X41 Tablet and X41 are essentially T43, when it comes to architecture.

Just right now I tried the 2GB PC2-5300 stick in Tablet. [PC2-5300 is actually for T60's but of course they could work slower at 4200...]
It booted just fine with 2.5GBs total.

My Guess X41 would behave same way.

Both Micron and Hynix barnds worked.

Admin note: Added PIC warning 7/26/09

Did you try 2GB + 1GB for the X41 tablet?

Tbalet has only one slot available, and 512MB hard soldered inside onto motherboard.

Ahhh, I forgot about that!

It's so exciting to know that the X41/X41t can have 2.5GB of RAM, 67% more than the official value.

Once booted, Windows XP shows 1.99GB of RAM and Internal Video of 128MB...

It's kind of weird. I think 915GM only support 1GB per slot, and the max RAM you can use on a X41(t) is 1.5GB. Probably you have to try checking the usage of RAM by some software and see if it's really 2GB under Windows.

Reminiscent of the OS seeing 3GB of the 4GB in the T60 etc. I wonder if Vista can see all 2.5GB?

When official documents were written for the 915GM and the X41, 2GB modules weren't available.

@pianowizard i don't think that this is the same problem here, the problem you state (with the 3,5gb) is about shadowing momory addresses for pci ressources, as I said in the corresponding t43 thread the book does not show more than 2gb to the OS, where I believe it is a bios issue as the chipset seems to work correctly with larger modules.

btw vista is showing 2gb ob memory just as windows xp does on my t43 and my t43p (and linux does too) so I believe the thinkpad bios is just cropping the memory at 2GB. possibly older bios versions won't I don't know and I don't want to try to downgrade bios either.

what is the performance difference between 1.5 and 2.5 gb?

Is it very noticeable. I know it's not like the jump from .5 to 1.5

depends on how much memory you need. unless you don't require more than 1,5 gb for your applications you will not notice any speed difference. btw... i don't know why everybody seems to be ignoring this here. YOU CAN'T have 2,5 GB in the X41 as the memory above 2GB will not be availabe to the OS as I wrote various times.

I just installed a 2GB stick in my X41, and the BIOS correctly reports 2.5GB. Windows XP needs the "/3GB" flag added to boot.ini to work correctly.

I added /3GB in the boot.ini, but Windows still see only 2GB. How do you make Windows see all the 2.5GB then?

Aw, darn it, I was looking for prices on a 2gb module for my X40...Only to discover that it doesn't exist for ordinary 333/400mhz ddr so-dimm.

Gah....Too bad.

If you use Vista, the the upgrade may be interesting.

The tests I've read show great improvement when you upgrade from 1 GB to 2 GB.

You can have a look at these tests here :

http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-325.html

If you don't understand french, then just have a look at the illustrations.

I suppose you'll see also great improvement if you put 2.5 GB of memory. ;)

Which model of tablet was this? I have the 1866-6GU. If anyone can confirm that it will work with this I'd love to find out before I go buying a 2 GB stick. Thanks.

Where did you find 2GB memory for the x41t ? pm me if you want, I'm | | <- this far from having my X41t and if it's worth the cost of uppin it to 2,5GB I'll know what i can save up for! :D

I just tried this on my laptop and I too get 1.99 GB. I wonder why different people have different successes, perhaps it depends on the model?

Is it possible that the system only reports 1.99GB but can still use all of it? Is there a third party app that can provide information about how much memory is available?

System properties tells me 1.99 GB where as System Information has the following:

Total Physical Memory 2,560.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 1.27 GB
Total Virtual Memory 3.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 2.96 GB

I'm not entirely sure what it means, but it appears contradictory.

2 GB 667 Mhz module in X41 2528-5FU.

BIOS 2.09 shows 2.5 GB. XP and Linux recognize 2 GB only.

BIOS seems to block access to the remaining 512 MB.

Can everyone who actually gets 2.5 GB report BIOS version, please?

same here only 2 gb under xp no mater what switches i use
bios sees 2.5gb i have a theory that maybe bios sees both chips my new 2 gb and on 512 on board but cuts the second off because it is slower i remember thinkpads being some cranky about mixing memory for example 4 gb would only work with 533 clock though both chips being 667

IMemory speed being the issue here? I suppose not. X41 does not support 667 MHz at all. It offers a 533 MHz bus clock. The memory is downward compatible and has to run at 533 MHz. The system never tests whether the memory could run quicker. BIOS does not see 667 MHz memory, only 2.5 GB of 533 MHz memory. At least in theory.

Does anyone actually get to use 2.5 GB? Not only in BIOS but an OS seeing them? If so, could you report BIOS version, Embedded Controller Program version and RAM specification, please?

I do not mind getting 2 GB only. Not much. It is better than 1,5 GB. But I am curious.

X41 2GB RAM Problems

#23 Post by ibmdell » Sat Oct 20, 2007 5:43 pm

After XP booted to desktop, the bottom Taskbar is all black, and mouse can move, but cannot double click to launch anything.

Is there some setting I read elsewhere that the XP ini file requires?

Appreciate someone providing instructions.

Intel 855GME can address 2 GB. So yes, there is a chance. Finding a 2 GB DDR 2700 (or DDR 3200 which is downward compatible) non-ECC module will be tricky. If one even exists.

2.5GB not working?

#28 Post by samxmas888 » Wed Jan 30, 2008 5:06 am

I have an x41 type 2527 with 512MB onboard and 512MB upgrade.

Both are DDR2 afaik.

I've taken the expanded 512MB sodimm out and replaced it with a 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz sodimm and the system will not boot up at all.

I read here that you could add a /3GB switch to the boot.ini file to tell windows to recognise extra RAM for upgrades etc - I edited this line (as shown below) but still the system will not boot at all:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP" /fastdetect/3GB

Should I go for a BIOS upgrade?

I've done the BIOS upgrade, added the /3GB switch to boot.ini and still no joy.

Could it be cos I'm using 667Mhz ram?

667MHz should be backward compatible. Maybe this module is defective?
