How to stop Rescue & Recovery popup at bootup?

I have a x60x 1704, and some time ago replaced the 80GB DD with a 80GB SSD.

In the process of the HD change I lost the R&R partition - basically because Acronis Trueimage was not capable of copying it over. This didn't matter as I use TI for image backups anyway...

But recently something has changed and I keep getting the above popups appearing; just once at bootup.

I cannot see any program or Service whose name appears related to R&R. I also can't see anything in Msconfig, though obviously there are processes which might be doing it, but I don't want to mess with that because it might stop the computer booting.

Can anybody suggest how to stop this?

The OS is WinXP SP2. This is one of those computers where SP3 trashes the HD (tried it several times). I have another x60s which went to SP3 OK. But I cannot see this is related.

I would appreciate any help.

Check in your Backup scheduling: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docu ... x?mfr=true
It probably wants to make a backup and cannot find the space for it (would have been on the (missing) R&R partition).
Cancel this schedule and you should be grand.

Many thanks.

I had a look in Backup and cannot see any scheduled jobs.

I cannot see anything resembling "backup" in the list of services, either.

The thing is that the box which pops up is, IIRC, titled "Rescue and Recovery". That is a separate Thinkpad program, which AFAICR I uninstalled a long time ago.

Maybe re-install R&R and then UNinstall it again?
I have no clue otherwise.

I have no idea how to install R&R.

There are many posts on the net from people who upgraded their HDs and lost that extra partition. In principle, there is no reason why IBM/Lenovo could not supply a simple program which creates that partition and writes the stuff into it, etc. But last time I was installing a SSD in a Thinkpad, I could not find anything.

I will try to go a global search for a file containing that text string, next time it appears. It is certainly getting started by a registry entry.

I have a screenshot here
http://www.zen74158.zen.co.uk/temp-files-ph/window.jpg

which shows the Rescue and Recovery popup, and a process monitor showing that csrss.exe appears to be the culprit, but csrss is used for a whole load of other stuff too.

It seems to happen once per day, after boot-up. So it seems to be a scheduled process of some sort.

Progress report:

I have gradually disabled every "Lenovo" item in the Startup section of MSCONFIG but it still pops up...

This is the popup:

I wonder how it can be stopped? It appears after a startup, every few days.

i would say that the easiest thing, but not the quickest!!, is to download the R &R program from Lenovo's website and install it. Shut down and restart as the program asks, and then un-install it. This way maybe you can remove all the registry entries without 'breaking' anything. Obviously it would seem that Acronis has copied everything relating to R & R except the partition itself, including the scheduled back-ups that R & R likes to try to do.

Will the R&R program re-write the recovery partition? I don't actually want to do that.

I am sure a clever programmer could find where that text message comes from in no time at all (even allowing for the fact that text messages are normally stored separately from the program using them, for internationalisation reasons) and then wipe out the program which is triggering it.

Perhaps significantly, it doesn't appear immediately on startup. It appear about 30 seconds after the login prompt appears, and it appears even if you have not logged in.

Try a Search or Find for all files containing the text "Rescue and Recovery".
That should point to a directory, which might give you a clue from where this bugger comes.

the R & R program doesn't re-write the partition. It is only a program to help back-up and restore from previous saved back-ups etc.

A search digs out about 50 files, some of which look like they contain text messages in different languages. Unfortunately those words are rather common on a Thinkpad :)

I tried reinstalling R&R from the .msi file which comes with the computer, and about halfway through the process it complains that some file is missing, and aborts...

I wonder if I should just delete all registry entries entitled Rescue and Recovery? There is a number of them, including some which look like scheduled processes.

Rather than battle with an obnoxious R&R program, forget about it, and get Acronis TrueImage, to make regular images. It's faster and a lot less headachy.

You can't use the msi file from the computer. You would have to download it from lenovo. If you manage to find all the registry files on your own, that might help.

I use Trueimage for backups anyway, RealBlackStuff.

Where is the X60S R&R full installation program?

I do not want to create a new recovery partition, because the disk space for it is no longer available.

An update: I went into the registry and deleted some Lenovo keys which looked like scheduled processes, and that has fixed it :)

Many thanks ALL for your suggestions :thumbs-UP:
