Thinkpad X61 with sxga+ mod - slightly flashing "lines"

#1 Post by my03 » Mon Jul 05, 2021 7:21 am

So after having the new panel at home for a year, i mustered the courage to dive into the modification of my X61. As i have tried it in the past (and failed - mainly due to the wrong tools at hand at the time) i was super careful and light on the touch this time, using a dremel to remove the ears.

I researched many guides (of course) before starting it make absolutely sure that i would get the best results. When i did this modification (remember i was super careful) i took off the metal frame and made it a "U" and carefully taped the top to not let through light that way (and to be able to close the bezel properly). In the end, It actually came out quite nice - with two open questions :)

1. whenever i have the machine powered on with the power-brick connected, i sometimes see som minor "lines" flashing on the screen. Not always, but sometimes. When i pull the power-plug and run only on batteries, everything is perfect without any lines at all. I have a couple of different power-bricks (both 65w and 90w) that i have tried to alter between but it does not matter.

2. What is the trick to snap on the top part of the bezel properly? right now, on the top-left side there is this gap that i can't get snapped shut.

Just wanted to follow up on this. It is now fixed.

The issue was apparently the adapter cable that i used previously (which seemed to be causing this odd flicker). I bought it a long time ago (from a member here i believe).

Not wanting to give up on the new screen, i ordered a new cable from Aliexpress (Kevins trade shop) and installed it and now the screen is 100% perfect.
