X230(t) and Lion/ML

#1 Post by The Freeman » Fri Jul 27, 2012 6:13 pm

Let's do this
Image
This thread is for any X230 or X230t owners looking to set up their laptop with ML (or Lion if that's all that works). As I don't have my machine yet, I can't make any attempts. I'll be posting my progress when I get my machine.

Installation instructions for the previous generation: http://www.thinkpads.com/forum/viewtopi ... 2&t=102098
And to the poster that came up with that excellent tutorial.. Are any of those kexts 64bit? That may be a problem.

Any advice is appreciated!

I'll be getting my X230 some time next week (hopefully!), and I'll be attempting this install as well.

I'll be getting my X230 (not the tablet version, unfortunately) in the next few weeks.

As soon as I get to it, I'll have it Dual-Boot to OS X and write here (and on InsanelyMac/Lenovo) on how to get it running and how well it does.
(I'm not sure which version of OS X I'll install though... L/ML is a good start though.)

I got my x230 and ML's InstallESD.dmg (including the updates) of 10.8.{0,1,2} downloaded.

I'll check and do installation as time permits in the coming weeks and provide documentation in detail.
If possible, I intend to do a "as clean and unobtrusive" installation as possible (i.e. with an existing W7 x64 installation and only partition resize etc.) ... I hope everything pans out.

Using a custom DSDT seems the cleanest way to go.
Concerning hardware support: HD4000, CPU and LAN seems supported more or less OOTB.

I'll edit this post to document my progress. (And I'll setup a wiki with a complete installation guide when I get the time.)
If any of you previous posters got ideas and hints already from your experiences, please post.

Until next time!

Update - 2012 November 22:
I'm currently setting up the boot medium (16gb USB3 stick); as I previously write very vanilla.
Except that I'll use a MBR partition scheme - no GUID partitioning scheme, due to my existing Windows 7 installation.

Update - 2012 November 26
Creating a boot medium is coming forward (it boots!), extracting the DSDT table with a cross-platform (available on win/mac/linux) tool so far as well. I'm currently working out how to not let it crash while booting up setup.
I'm currently using Clover v2 (to boot setup/my usb stick), OSPackage from osx86 (for MBR support), DSDT editor from olarila and I hope using BCDEdit will work out fine as boot manager (to save me from damaging and/or changing away from my existing Win7 boot manager.)

Update - 2012 November 27
This is far from fun by now.
GraphicsInjector didn't work so I had to do a few other tricks... so far I removed kernelcache, added NullCPUPowerManagement.kext (which is a workaround only) and no working local keyboard/trackpoint (but my external Thinkpad USB keyboard works.)
So I finally started setup and launched it, but beyond that... oh well, I'll see.

Sure thing! :)

I have it on a OneNote file with a detailled outline of what to do and lots of notes mixed in...
as soon as I can see that this is the right approach I'll start publishing how I got there, so stay tuned.

PS: I'm currently having a few sickdays though to avoid getting really sick so it may have to wait until the weekend.
PPS: DSDT-editing turns out to be really... uhm... extensive work. ;)

X230T owner here. I tried to get ML installed using Unibeast and Multibeast without success.

I'll start a new thread charting my progress and everything since I don't have the tablet version and I imagine anyone with a x230t would prefer something including his touchscreen.

Setting it up on my x230 works, but so far getting the right screenresolution and sound wasn't so great yet.
Webcam worked out of the box though, ethernet as well.

I must admit that it's rather frustrating and not recommended without a second computer to help while setting it up.

Hi all,
just wanted to share my experience with my x230t 3434-CTO.

Specs:

i7-3520M
16 gb ram
256 gb crucial sata SSD drive (Windows 8)
256 gb crucial msata SSD drive (OS X 10.8)
Intel HD graphics 4000

Installation:
- USB flash drive using "OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion bootable DVD for Intel PCs", by Olarila with Hackboot 1 and 2 (http://www.macbreaker.com/2012/07/mount ... albox.html).
- used an external CD drive to boot Hackboot cds
- used a real MacBook pro to create USB flash drive installation of OS X.

First boot & problems:
-Hackboot 2 (CD)
-then followed post installation as described for x220 (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=105334):
didn't use DSDT.aml
used all kexts in S/L/E/ with Kext Utility
patched the kexts as escribed
used chameleon as described

- problems: reboot loop :(

updated to new chimera boot loader (Tonymac)

Now, I can boot in with GraphicsMode = 1366x768x32 (good resolution) :)
but QT not working, no sound and I'm using a nano USB WIFI

I'll keep you up to date when I have time to work on this...

Good luck!

UPDATE

Intel HD graphics working!!!

- added following Key in "org.chameleon.Boot.plist" in \Extra folder + GraphicsEnabler=Yes :

<key>HD4000PlatformId</key>
<string>3</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>

Hi luwi,

Thank you for your post. It really encouraged me to install OSX to my x230.
However, I am still struggling to turn HD4000 graphics on, so I'd like to ask you a question:
did you replace any kernel extension to enable HD4000 graphcis?

My x230 could be booted up with good resolution but without HD4000 graphics (GraphicsEnabler = No).
If I set GraphicsEnabler = Yes and added HD4000PlatformId = 3, it made a black screen though I used a chimera boot loader 1.11.1
A graphics kernel failed to be loaded ("cannot resolve library dependency") according to a verbose log.

I hope if you could give me a clue. Thanks.

Hi,

I fixed my mistake. I misunderstood that I should use Chinema 1.11.1. After I had a boot loader replaced with patched Chameleon in the following page, the HD4000 has been enabled. I also confirmed that an external display port of a ultra dock works fine and connects to a 2560x1600 screen. (NOTE: I didn't check a mini display port on the left side due to a lack of a right cable). Thanks!
