X200 Thoughts

#1 Post by Slope » Thu Mar 22, 2012 4:31 pm

I currently have a Thinkpad X60 which I really enjoy. I also have a HP desktop computer that is less than 2 years old. I LOVE the X60, but never really got used to the half sized backspace key. The only thing I use my desktop for is web surfing and using the DVD/CD burner.

I would like to get one laptop with a dock station and use that as my only computer. Since the things that I do don't require a lot of horse power, I thought I'd get an X200 with a docking station, get an external USB burner and I should be all set.

What should I look for in a X200? I see people in the forums say it will take 8GB of RAM, but the specs I see say that it can only take 4GB of RAM (http://www.superwarehouse.com/Lenovo_Th ... /p/1570700). I figured that hard drive wouldn't matter as I want to put a SSD in it. Any other thoughts of things I should be looking for? I've been watching ebay and see prices all over the map. What should one look at spending for something that would work for me?

Thanks for your help.

Both x200 and x200s will take 8Gb ram. I installed 8 Gb ram on my x200s for 9 months and never have any problem. Just got a x200 and put another 8 Gb and so far Windows is working just fine. I also put ssd into both machine ( used to be Corsair, then OCZ, now it's all Intel ) and the performance is very acceptable.

The only concern is with the quality of LCD screen. Didn't like it that much when I first see x200s 1440x900 ( but I LOVE the resolution ). But when looking at the x200 LCD ( instead of LED ) I just couldn'st stand it. I am planning to do a affs mod on this x200.

Price various greatly but I would say I'm willing to spend $300-350 for a well spec/condition x200, around $500-550 for a x200s, both with docking station.

One of the reasons I was looking at an X200 was because I hate the touchpad. I do like the higher processor speed of the X201. Can you disable (either pysically or through software) the touchpad? I also want to run Windows 7, which I would need to buy for an X200 but it looks like the X201 came with it? Is this correct?

Thanks again.

The x201 palmrest can be replaced with one without a touchpad and with or without a fingerprint reader.

Good deal on a w/o TP/FPR here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-Lenovo-FRU- ... 3f1555af12

Or the touchpad can be disabled in BIOS.

Do you know, are the screens any better on the x201 or is it the same as the x200? If' read a lot of people upgrading the screens because they aren't very good...how do these screens compare to the x60? I am happy with the display of the x60, just don't like the half sized backspace key.
