Yes. It officially suports only 8 GB but that's because there were no 8GB modules back when it was released.

Sorry my english are not very good. Modules you mean there were not 8 gb ram per slot when was released ?
I think the X220 has two slots for ram ,right ?
The X230 how much max ram can be update ?

X230 can handle 16gb of RAM, 2x8gb.
X220 can handle 16gb of RAM, 2x8gb.
Both have 2 RAM slots.

Yes, I did get two 8GB modules from Ebay yesterday, and it worked perfectly fine with my x220.

Too many similar threads... here again...

As somebody who has been running on 16GB RAM for almost a year, I find the following still true:

- There is 16GB at 1600MHz
- There is 8GB at 1833MHz
- There is 16GB at 1833MHz, BUT it runs at 1600MHz (this is new)

All of these are "compatible" with the X220.

The X230 can in fact handle 32GB of RAM. However, the catch is that no 16GB DDR3 modules actually exist in the SO-DIMM format.

As for me, my X220 is currently equipped with 16GB of RAM and is running like a charm.
