Farewell to my X220...

#1 Post by axur-delmeria » Tue Nov 28, 2023 12:15 am

It was retired around May this year, after acquiring a secondhand T480s.
Still use it occasionally, but last month one of the RAM sticks failed.
Yesterday it wouldn't power on. Tried 3 chargers and the Series 3 Mini Dock, but the none of the LEDs light up or even blink.

If I find a cheap X220 or X230 motherboard, I'll probably revive it-- it's got an IPS screen and the chassis is in decent shape (save for the palmrest).
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
RIP: X220 4291-C91 X61 7676-A24 760XD-U9E

After mulling about it, I realize that an X220 board isn't going to get me far-- I got the i7 model specifically for the USB 3.0 port, and the lack of it on the i5 model is a deal-breaker.

Isn't it normally a single bad fuse somewhere? I bet there are forum members here with the know-how on how to fix it.

Then again, I have a similar problem with my old desktop motherboard, and haven't been able to find meaningful advice.

X230 board drops in well enough in my experience. My particular X330 sits in an X220 bottom case with X220 kb bezel and keyboard, and X230 palmrest. You get two USB 3.0 and Intel HD4000. Only "problem" is the Mini DP in the Full DP cutout, but Mini DP still plugs in without obstruction, and you can get Full DP from the docks.

Ah, memories. Back then you swapped stuff from above, and not from below. That was a genuine improvement in laptop design to be honest... as long as the keyboard remains modular (it's such a pain in the a$$ to swap an integrated-in-bezel keyboard...).
