Turns out it was a blown mosfet on the laptop mainboard that was responsible for power to the screen. It probably shorted when the old panel broke. I replaced the mosfet and now the screen is working perfectly. Awesome colors. But there are a bad pixel and some backlight bleeding in the corners. And it looks a bit bashed upp to be honest. The picture quality is perfect though!

Also since it is a "normally black" panel you cannot test the panel by just plugging it the CCFL and see if it turns white, as it should in fact be black.

I use it in a HP Compaq 2230s btw. It replaces a Samsung LTN121AT02.

After my recent purchase of a X201 (manufact. 2011), i found the screen dissapointing because of the small viewing angles. While browsing the internet, i came to this forum topic and decided to replace the original LED screen with the matte AFFS panel from the ebay seller (btw., the seller increased now the price of his last 3 panels to $388!). The cable and inverter was also purchased from ebay. Delivery from China was fast. I am happy with the result, i have seen no dead pixels or other defects until now. The max. brightness is a tad lower, but viewing angle and color is much improved! To match colors with my Dell 2209WA IPS Screen, i had to reduce brightness of the red channel -10, green +5 and blue +15, Gamma 0.9. The original panel in the X201 was a LED type from LG (type LP121WX3-TL-C1) which is brighter, but with the typical smaller viewing angles. If somebody is interested in the LED screen, matching cable and LED board, contact me.

Hello!

I did the mod on my european X200s. Changed the crappy AUO screen ot the HV121WX4-110. Easy mod.
The new panel is far superior of course. Measured with my i1Pro spectrophotometer, and the maximum
brightness is 220cd/m2, and contrast is 730:1. AUO was 185cd/m2, and 230:1. But the AUO panel
had terrible viewing angles. From close viewing distance, half of the screen had terrible contrast an colors.

Viewing angles are excellent with AFFS. Colors look nice, but the color saturation is not high. The RGBCMY reference points are lower in saturation, than the sRGB standard. The panel is glare and it's not that bad, but visible. I dont like the glare, but I can live with it. In return the image is very(!) clean without the matte layer.

Conclusion: this mod is a must have. Photos and videos look way better on the affs screen.

I did this mod on my X200 recently - no idea why I didn't do it earlier! The viewing angles are excellent, and colours are far more accurate. Brightness is better, but not stellar. I do have some backlight bleed in the lower left hand part of the screen, but it doesn't bother me. No dead pixels or similar.

In my experience, this panel is marginally thicker than the original panel on the X200. Depending on how tight you screw and how you mount the panel, you may get less or more severe light bleed. If you get getting some serious light bleeds, you may want to remount the panel to see if that helps.

You have find to

- find out the pins of the new panel (which pin does what?)
- find out the pins of the old panel
- build a connector

This is not possible for an advanced user here, you have to really have good technical skills to do that. It is not worth the time or money, too. I would definitely buy another panel, even if it is a few hundred USD more.

it's more than just building a jumper harness to change the order of pins.   it would require connecting individual wires from the LED board directly to the new panel to supply some of the power and signal connections.   you'd wind up with a spiderweb of wires soldered to the panel.   keep in mind that you'd be going from a system that supplies 20 pins to one that requires 30 pins.   those 10 extra connections have to come from somewhere.   that somewhere is the LED board supplied to the main board on the back of the new panel.

it can be done.   it would take some effort though.

regarding whether this is better than the HV121WX4-120, i'd say it's not.   CCFL in my experience is superior to LED in terms of color accuracy.   battery life is the only reason i'd say the LED panel is better.

in short, i would highly recommend sticking with the HV121WX4-120 if you have one now.   it's the better option and a plug-and-play modification, easy enough for average users to service.   the only negative is a slight nick in battery life.

I also experienced some light bleeding. Shall I worry, will it permanently damage the screen? If I remount the LCD, can I expect it to get better?

Why is it only possible to upgrade x200(s) ccfl to AFFS?

Why is it possible to upgrade only x200(s) CCFL panels to AFFS? Is it because the AFFS panel is thicker and therefore it takes more place? Or is it a connector issue? Thanks!

the short answer is that it's a connector issue.   the X200 LVDS cable for LED panels isn't directly compatible with the X200T LED panel.

an X200s requires an X200 lid/bezel/hinge/antenna assembly to be compatible.   this is a size issue.

read through the existing discussion for more explanation.

I've skimmed through the whole thread and I just to double check that understand everything before i proceed with purchasing a screen for the swap.

- the 110/100 screen with digitizer will work but the digitizer has to be removed?
any details on how i proceed with that?
- I also read some people who did the swap without the removal. Is this possible?
- Lastly, i want to truely explore the 110 screen as an option because its far cheaper!

When I did my X200 upgrade, I left the digitizer as the cable from it went into the LCD and I didn't want to mess with it. It's very small and flat. It shouldn't cause any problems. The touch surface is the one that must be removed. It won't fit otherwise.

I had the 110 screen. It was quite nice, but the glare could at times be annoying. I'd bet if you bought one of those grade B screens on ebay, once you removed the touch surface, they'd look new underneath. This is conjecture on my part as I don't have any firsthand knowledge. Good Luck.

and just to clarify the touch surface is on the front side of the screen not the back. correct?

the sockets aren't polarized, pinned, or sized correctly.   the 30-pin end should be female instead of male, and 20-pin male instead of female.

in short, it won't work.   sorry.

I've looked for them some day ago and looks they aren't available anywhere.

BTW my opinion is that ICM or not thus diplay has really poor colors.

They are well contrasted, the black is reasonably black but the colors are just wrong..

Can you not just use the tablet's profile from Lenovo assuming it's a reasonable starting point.

I don't know if there is some color rendering difference between -100 and -110/120 displays. But the Lenovo profile for me made the things worse (more warmer color than the standard sRGB profile that looks already too warm)

For the record, my HV121WX4-100 hydis panel had a really short live (cracked by a my client), I replaced it with a PVA one and although is still not a perfect display now I have a decent white.

Both displays have pros and cons, but for me the PVA panel wins.

Erik (or anyone else skilled on this topic),

Could you give some tips on how to find the pinouts/mount holes/depth dimensions for LCD panels?

I'm determined to change the panel on my x201 to something less visually offensive, but I would like to try keeping the LED board and cable the same. As mentioned by others here, the X200t LED panels don't work. I'm hoping that I can find another panel that fits, but I can't find detailed specs for the panels. I'd gladly share my experience with the forum afterwards.

Also, this is unrelated, but what is the difference between the 'protection plate' LCD panel and the 'direct bonding/touch' LCD panel in the x200t manual? It looks like the 'protection plate' models can't be mounted with LCD brackets?

you can't use the LED cable with a CCFL display.   the number of wires and physical socket designs are vastly different, plus the LED board can't drive a CCFL panel.   you'll need a CCFL inverter and cable to make the project work.   there's no getting around that.

the direct-bonded panel has a glass overlay adhered to the display frame using 3M VHB tape.   the protection plate panel is a polycarbonate overlay adhered using foam tape (if memory serves).   buy based on the LCD part number.   -100 and -110 are glossy where the -120 panel has a glass layer on the outer LCD surface with an anti-glare coating.   the -120 isn't technically "matte" by definition.   it's simply a glossy panel with glass overlay to cut down on internal glare when spaced below the writing surface.

The LED backlit TP must be converted to CCFL (as usual) then converted back to LED with a CCFL replacement kit like this http://www.lcdparts.net/LB.aspx

I found the BoeHydis CCFL AFFS panel for $30 so I went with it, but I'm still curious.

Sorry if I wrote a bit vaguely last time. Erik, is it possible to use _any_ other 12.1" LED panels (not necessarily Lenovo parts)?

Also, I found one guy in Taiwan that actually did the cable soldering for the LED panels, but he seemed a bit adventurous.

I've looked very quickly in to this (because my X200s was natively CCFL backlit) and AFAIK the problem is that most of the 12.1 panels are CCFL, and while there are a number of LED panels compatible with the standard one, they are all low quality panels, like the one meant to be replaced.

The few good quality alternatives are all used on tablets and have a different connector.

BTW the worst case is the 1440x900 display placed on most X200s, there is only one 12'' panel (with that resolution) ever built, the one already present on those notebooks.
