Thinkpad X220 16GB 1866 DDR3L

#1 Post by tmpman123 » Sat Jun 22, 2019 2:01 pm

I currently have a thinkpad x220 laptop with the latest 1.46 BIOS mod (unlock speed to 1866). When I try to install the new 2x8GB DDR3L 1866 1.35v RAM from crucial.com I get the 1 3 3 1 beep error meaning memory error. In this case is the RAM defective or the thinkpad x220 doesn't support DDR3L RAM?

Thanks

Did you load the original Lenovo 1.46 BIOS?
That has NO 1866 unlock!
For that you need the modded BIOS from here: http://x220.mcdonnelltech.com/resources/

I do have the latest 1.46 BIOS and then I mod it to make it unlock the 1866mhz speed as I heard that any BIOS version beyond 1.28 will result 1333mhz max RAM speed. I also tried this RAM in my other thinkpad t420 laptop and it still giving me the 1 3 3 1 memory error beep code. So in this case is the RAM bad?

I think more likely that you goofed somewhere doing that mod yourself.

My X220 Tablet is still on BIOS version 1.26 and I just installed a pair of Crucial 8 Gb (16 Gb total) DDR3L-1866 1.35/1.5V SODIMMS...working well. For reference, they are Crucial Part #: CT2K102464BF186D.

Will try these in the X220 this weekend, (need to do a McDonnell BIOS update in this one as well) but I would expect the same results.
